I'm trying to decide between the Cobra 18, Cobra 19, and the Uniden 520 so far. I want one that I can fit in the din below my head unit.

In my experience, mounting the antenna bracket to metal works well. I have had to sand the paint down so that the mount is touching bare metal though, in order to get a decent swr reading.

I would go with the Uniden and get an external speaker.

Well depends what u want. A good ole cobra 29 is the best I have one. With the fire stick antenna it works great... If u ask any trucker what to get they'll all say cobra 29. Plus if u aml the power to something like 80 watt u can reach out a good 10-15 miles otherwise stock works good 3-5i miles. Just keep in mind u get what u pay for. A 60$ cb will work like a 60$ cb, and a 100$ cb will work like a 100$ cb... And remember cb radios arnt as simple as plug and play, well if u want optimal performance of ur cb. U need to swirl ur system I.e. the optimal distance for ur antenna from the radio... The hight u should have the antenna, and invest in good cable to run from the radio to the antenna. Because if u run the cable and it gets any breaks in the coating where the break is will then interfere with the tip of the antenna cause lake of performance and range. I do not know how to swirl a radio I had a trucker friend do it but my 29, Is swirled perfect and I have pick up people on the east coast of Florida and I live on the west side. Also it's ideal to to ground ur antenna. I don't have pics but my 29 is stuck between my bench seat and shifter of my truck with antenna mounted on the tool box. Ive had it sense December last year... No problems with it I actually over power a lot of my buddies when I'm out there using it on trails...

my base unit was a HF Kenwood TS450s also with a Astron power supply. The antron base antenna is all fuzzy know. can't be bare handled

    Great radio!!! Heated or otherwise.

Now to continue your discussion... Buy a $150 HAM and it will work like a $500 CB :) Oh yeah, and it will be legal! :)

That Midland is what made me switch to HAM. I had two - and they both were serviced by Midland under warranty. The way they 'serviced' them? They threw them in the trash and gave me new ones. Other than being junk, it was a great radio! lol

If you are going to do a CB (my thoughts and prayers with you), go with the Cobra 29 or what ever that classic workhorse is.

alright i need some 1st gen pics of where you guys have your CB mounted... i was about to install my CB and my plan was to replace the ashtray but it wont fit, i took off the bracket and everything but it still wont fit and it gets in the way of the parking handle. i tried to eye ball and put the cb everywhere but looks like it wont fit snug, i dont have the center console. I have the bench seat, so if anybody has an idea post up, if i cant find a good spot then i guess ill just have to buy an all in one CB radio "/
