CB radio placement help

Can anybody post some pictures on where they mounted their cb radio in the cab?

You have the same body as mine..........I pulled my ashtray and stuck a Cobra Model 19 Ultra III........alittle dremel work. Your done in like 15 minutes. I can go out and take pics if you want to see what it looks like.

thanks guys. cobra69 that helps a bunch. i was talking to my buddy on how i thought i could mount it after a little dremel work, and you said the exact same thing. you even have the same cb as i do. how much of that plastic did you have to take off for it to fit? and is there anything else besides the shim holding it in?

 

There is a very thin wall of plastic at the back of the opening (its like a stop for the ashtray so it can not go further)you need to cut it out in order to fit the CB all the way in. With a little finess you can get the mounting bracket in there. Its gonna be a tight fit........I stuck the shim in there becuase I wasn't able to tight the screws all the way down.........Its rock solid and hasn't moved since the day I put it in......(I have never touched it after installing it).

 

Oh ok. how did you screw it in? and get the mounting bracket in there?

 

did the best i could going from the back and front........you might have to loosen up the mounting bolts for the piece of molding under the ashtray area in order to get behind it. I have seen others who cut the plastic wall in the back only half-way slide the CB in and take a piece of 2x4 wedge it under neath to hold it in place........it'll never move. Mine rattled a bit so I stuck the shim in the side like you see in the pic. Worked like a charm. Thats How I got the idea of the shim......LOL

 

It's not gonna be easy.........short of tearing the dash apart. It will test your patience. Dremel tool is worth its weight in gold x10.

 

haha cool. the problem i'm having is that the slot for the ashtray narrows as goes towards the back so i cant even get the cb all the way to the back. there are some gaps on the side that i guess the ashtray fit into. but what i was thinking is maybe i could grind some of that plastic down so the the cb fits square into that not-so-square slot...

 

yeah I think I had to do the same thing........I did mine over two years ago so I'm trying to remember what exactly I had to do. I do remember dremeling alot cuase I got burned several times by the melting plastic.....lol

 

ouch yeah dremels are great tools. i think ill get out there tomorrow and give it a shot with grinding some of the stuff down that you said. Thanks a bunch man, this will help save me some space in the cab

 

Yup...........if you get to frustrated with te mounting bracket go with the chunk of 2x4 under it. My buddy went that route and its never popped out and he hammers his truck off road.

Just take it slow with the dremel..........cut a little check fit of radio until it fits snuggly in place. YOU can't put any plastic back if you cut too much. I cut the back plastic wall from the top to the middle til the CB radio slide in past it..........the remaining plastic wall acts like a bracket for the radio to rest on.

 

I rigged mine with a power outlet adaptor and bought a powerful magnetic CB antenna. This way I only have to worry about it when in a caravan or wheeling.

one more question cobra, what did you do with the light in the ashtray?

 

easy install with a dremel and a fine file.


ran the cable under the brake light assembly rather than going through the sliding glass
