race radio is limiting though as its only worth getting if there are others in your area on the same frequencies...

Ham radio would be a better option as you can tap into frequencies other than race frequencies... gives you more communications options...

I personally think the best bang for the buck is a Yaesu FT-2800R or FT-2900R - 75 watts-o-power!

I don't have one. I have Yaesus but not that one.

Distance is dependent upon terrian. look at it this way... FRS .5 watts, CB 4.0 watts, Typical race radio 50 watts, FT 2900R 75 watts :D

75 watts at peak, yes. I wouldn't advise using it at peak power for very long though. The 2900 is one giant heatsink but running at 75w can overheat it. Typically you'd be using it at 25w or 10w.

I've used Yaesu and I do like them but prefer Icom. If you're going to buy a mobile HAM radio, stick with one brand. Each operates a little differently but it's a royal pain to relearn with a new radio.

In the same price range as the 2900 I'd look at the Icom 2200H. It's DSTAR compatible so you have the option later down the line if you choose.

Depends on the wattage and if you're using a repeater.

Get the FT-2900R You won't regret it.

I was stuck on the Kenwood 271a, Icom 200 and The ft 2900R. I ended up getting the Yaesu because of the watts it puts out and the price. And HBMurphy said it was a solid built radio.

What about Dual-Band radios? Is it better to get dedicated radios or would it do the job for your average radio user?

darn, i wouldn't know. It's local for us so we just go there. Next place I'd try is fry's electronics. I bought one from there for like $5 but i returned it because my firestik kit came with one. :) Good luck with whichever bracket you choose/find.
