Chrome grille, rear bumper, side mirrors and door handles with color matched front bumper and fender flares. The front seats are what I really like in the limited compared to the SR5. Very similar to 3rd gen 4runner seats with power lumbar and manual height adjustment for the front driver seat.

As simple as this is, this actually took a while to build. This is so far the "new" design of the bed rack that I'm thinking about. This new rack would allow me to actually use the rack for more than just something to mount my RTT on. Don't know when or if I'll build the rack, but if anything were to happen, it would be later on this year towards Winter when I wouldn't need the RTT.

I guess for anyone who's interested, the actual platform the RTT would mount to is 48"x48", the legs are ~ 14.5", and the new rack would be 12" off the bed. As a reference, my current bed rack is 10" off the bed, so this will be a tad taller, but it would allow for me to being able to mount Maxtraxs, if I ever chose to.

And as an FYI, I don't take credit for the construction of the Maxtrax.

I was literally about to ask for the dimensions of your rack - new to TW, just picked up my first Tacoma and this is my first planned mod. Just had to say your build is an inspiration!

Are you planning to use 1" x 2" pipe or a different dimension? Any concerns about the structural strength of the angles as opposed to curved pipes?

I'm 90% sure that'll end up using 1"x2" square tube. Might change the design though. I'm also months out from even committing to a new rack. No concerns about strength. .120 wall (1/8") is more than enough. Other TW members have used thinner and have had no issue.

Once you complete your updated bed rack, what is to become of the existing rack?

As so many others have mentioned - very nice 1st gen build!

Current bed rack right now will be up for sale before I build the new one. Profits can help fund the new one. Should be for sale in a few months.

    Thanks!

Edit: @cbechtold Do you currently use an annex with your RTT? If so, what is your input on having the annex/tent at that height?

Earliest I would like to sell would be after July 9th. But if someone makes me an offer I can resist, I think arrangements could be made. Bed rack and tent have to come off in a couple weeks anyway :spy:

No. Previous owner sold the annex.

That being said, I might use it since the space below could be used for a pet, extra storage, or a changing room. Maybe I'll buy the annex later on down the road.

I really like the height of your current rack. Aside from @Blackdawg, everyone else has theirs nearly at the height of the cab, and even then, Monte is an exception because his rack rises. I've been debating an RTT, but would really only get one if I included an annex - need to throw the dogs somewhere at night. Think it would be convenient or more of a pain in the ass at that height?

to bad it wont fit my 2nd gen, had to delay my rack build as my friends shop said they had a tube bender and when we showed up it turned out to be a conduit bender. i guess thats what i get for not buying my own bender.

Little bit of both a pain and convenience. Convenience because of the extra space/room would be nice on trips, but a pain because it just something extra you have carry, set up/tear down.

For multiple nights, it would be nice.

Bed rack could be modified. How wide is the inside of the second gen bed?
