Radio's are just temporarily set in the cubbies to see if I like where they are or not. If I stick to it I will be adding another cup holder where the one closest to the console is to get my space back for those.

Antenna setup is a NGP 2' Firestick, also have a 4' NGP Firestick that I can swap to that I leave in the truck if I need the extra range while out somewhere. Fantastic SWR's from the NGP setup as well.

Also, as far as SWR Meters go, Right Channel radio sells em with a jumper coax for less than $20, works great!

Yeah it does the job for me. The watt meter isn't something I use at all.

Anyone know if the Relentless Fab Hood Mount fits the 2016 Tacoma? Any issues with reception mounting it up front?

I can measure later for hole placement and give you a pretty good idea on if it will fit a 16. I have always had my antenna mounted up front but mostly to the fender. This is my first hood mount but shouldn't be a problem. I do advise if you plan on painting that you install it with the antenna and tweak the mount to have the antenna not lean. Then remove and paint.

    Hole center is 2 3/8
Hole center to inside lip of hood bracket is 5/8

Where are you pulling power from? You might need to home run both + and - direct to the battery to eliminate the noise.

I've got a distribution block for power supply. And am using a factory ground that is 6-8" back from the battery(short jumper to battery) up on the inside of the quarter panel just below where the hood seats, will post a pic later. The ground is shared with several other add ons(is that a no no?).

All you can do is try running each lead to the battery to see which one solves it. I got so frustrated with radio noise that I wound up getting rid of my Cobra and modded one of these to work as a CB. Much quieter.

Hoping to read through this thread this afternoon.

    Ultimately:
Who makes the best antenna for the money?
Clarity and range are the main focus, but I would also rather have a lower profile antenna over something huge and unsightly.
What is the disadvantage to mounting an antenna horizontally? I have a Prinsu rack, and would love to "hide" the antenna on it somewhere.

Edit: The radio is the Midland 75-822.

Your antenna needs to be in the same orientation as those you are communicating with. As most mobile units run vertical antennas, that dictates your choice.
As to the antenna choice, this one can be hidden off the truck when not in use and is pretty invisible when in use. I believe Wilson also makes non-magnetic mount antennas.

I was thinking about moving my antenna to that same spot this weekend but didn't know how I would run the Coax, do you have it just going down the window and under?

I've got it tucked in the window gasket and run down the back of the cab and under the truck

Well, didn't realize that. Okay, makes sense.

I don't mind hard mounting an antenna, and I think I would rather do that than having to remember a magnetic one.

Does it need to be exposed (versus inside a camper shell)?
Can I get a shorter (I've seen fire stick mentioned) one that will perform as well as the long whip style I've use in the military?

The ideal setup is the longest possible antenna mounted on the highest point on the vehicle. Practical considerations mean compromise. But inside a camper shell would be bad. This looks like an excellent solution:

I like the idea of mounting it to the rack like he's done.

Could I mount a "base" to the rack (and run a wire into the cab), and attach/remove the antenna as needed?

What would I need to buy to facilitate that?

If the antenna is removable, function > form.

Look into the Diamond motorized antenna mounts. It's probably going to be the rout I'm going to take, if it'll hold the weight of my antenna. I've seen a few expedition guys running them.

There's also a few manual rotating up/down mounts. A Google search should provide a pretty good idea.

I would avoid a removable base or antenna. Just creates more opportunities for failure. Antennas and their associated connectors are very sensitive
