I have a 2018 that just threw a CEL, is there a way to check what error code it is without needed a scanner? On my jeep there was a way to make it display on the dash, does the Taco do that?

Probably not and I wouldn't go poking paper clips in something that new.. Take it to an auto parts store, they usually read codes for free. Hell take it to a dealership, it's new enough you shouldn't be worrying about it.

With all the tech they pack in this thing it'd be a no brainer to add a way to display a CEL error code...

If it's a brand new Tacoma, take it to a dealer and use your warranty on it.
