Hit all five of these codes. Cleared them myself, they came on the next day. Tire place cleared them again when they installed my tpms, came back. I've read every thread on this forum related to these codes, and it seems most likely to be the charcoal canister or maybe the evap pump. I wish there was a clear answer.

Me too. Codes came back for me again the other day. Hard to justify $300+ for some codes that come back once a year or so. But I'm to the point of doing it.

For those who have gone through it, using this web page as a parts reference: https://toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota....l-v6-gas/emission-system--emission-components

Did you just replace the canister (77740-04020) and filter (77746-04010)? Or did you also replace the Air Switch Valve (25860-0P010) or Purge Solenoid (90910-AC001)? This is one of those where I don't want to replace more than necessary....

I took mine to the stealership, and the service tech somehow determined that it was because my charcoal canister was saturated with gas. I had removed it the week before and didn't see that myself... But, he said that I needed a charcoal canister, and quoted me $550 to replace it. I bought one myself and switched them out (pump included). I cleared the codes, drove it around for a while, and guess what!! They came back...

Haven't changed anything yet, just trying to figure out where to start. I think I'm going to do the cheap stuff first - PCV valve, failing that, gas cap. If neither of those do it, I'll do the valve/solenoid, then the detection pump. And if all that fails, the canister itself. Pretty sure I can do it all myself. It looks time consuming but not too difficult for me.

I believe you either have to cut one of the bed supports or raise the bed in order to get the canister out. I'd like to know what was successful for others and replace all of those parts at once.

I've read that you can use a 2x4 and wedge it under there to push it up just enough to get the canister out. We'll see. If not I'll probably just cut the support.

Hello...New to the Forum but here is my issue and what I did and maybe someone can help

    Active Code - P0453
    Pending Codes - P043E, P043F, P0453, P2401, P2402, P2419

Based on what I read I decided to replace the Entire Canister Assembly and Filter Assembly. Got the parts from my local Toyota Dealership and yes I paid like $500.

Replaced the Canister and Filter. Can be done easily by lowering the spare and wiggling the canister out. No need to wedge or lift the bed. Hose clamps are a little tricky but was able to get it done.
    Cleared the Codes

Drove around and next day I get P0453. Check the PID Data and find out the Pressure Reading is at the very high end. Makes sense why the code came back on. Decided to leave the scanner hooked up and disconnect the harness for the Canister. DATA STILL READS HIGH.......IT SHOULD READ ZERO WITH SENSOR DISCONNECTED...WTF

Checked the harness from the canister to where it enters the truck under the Drivers Door Sill.....Everything looks good. Its a 2008 but only has 38,000 miles on it.

Im fed up with this for today but if anyone has any suggestions im all ears.

I don't have any suggestions but holy shit that is low mileage for a truck that old. Did you buy it and decide to just not drive it at all for 10 years?

It was passed down from my girlfriends grandfather after he passed away......He basically used it as a grocery getter......We love the truck but this issue is new and driving us crazy.....Weve put like 6000 miles on it since we took possession of it

IDK. In my situation I replaced the parts and haven’t had any codes thrown since.
This is on top of adding the LRA 34gal aftermarket fuel tank.
Also: having a 1” body lift made swapping out the canister and such SO much easier. No need to pull the bed! :D

Add me to the list of victims of this POS canister failure. My new canister should be in tomorrow. To answer that question, the air switch valve has nothing to do with the EVAP system operation so you don't need to order that. If the Purge VSV is stuck you should expect another MIL (P0441). I did not order the filter, I'll inspect mine when I replace the canister and make sure it's not wet or full of debris.

The Air switch valve you referenced is used for the Acoustic Control Induction System, and looks more like an "F" shape, whereas the purge VSV looks like an "L" shape. The air switch valve has nothing to do with the EVAP testing.

You can check the test results with an OBDII scanner to see exactly what failed. In my case, it appears the vent valve stuck closed. It really doesn't matter since it's not a serviceable item anyhow, but I guess nice to know what has caused it. The troubleshooting steps suck for this issue, but basically if the 0.02 inch leak criterion measurement differ between the two checks you get all 5 MILs since it doesn't know what may be the cause, you have to further check the pressures recorded.

Well here's to hoping I don't have to do that again for a while. Getting it unwedged from the crossmember and where my shocks were was fun. Had to remove muffler to get the canister suction line removed. Several bolts rusty, had to chase the holes and reapply with liberal amount of anti seize on the way back in, luckily nothing stripped or broke though. Went and filled the gas up to the 1/2 way mark on the tank, now to let is rest and go through the testing cycle.

Well I drove the truck around for a few trips between yesterday and today, happy to say the codes are clear and the pressures are back to normal, time to go get the truck inspected :woot: Maybe I'll take apart my old one this weekend and see what I find inside if I get bored.

My guess is that the inside of this piece will be badly corroded.

Took apart the assembly today before I threw it out. Turns out you can buy this separate from the canister but it costs just about as much. Toyota PN 90910-AF002, there’s also a corresponding Denso PN on there. The pump/sensor assembly is common for many Toyota/Scion vehicles with only the canister itself being a different shape. The benefit of buying the whole assembly is you also get a new refueling diaphragm valve and new charcoal obviously.
    05CF4ED3-37CC-42BA-8955-8C615A1F9E10.jpg

Even though the outside looked not terrible the seal either went bad where the roll crimp was or at one point in time sucked in some water/moisture during the test. Motor measured around 7 Mohm and was seized, as well was the vent valve. Any negative pressure reading I had was likely due to vacuum created during the purge cycle.

Magic electron dust that came out of the assembly.
