CEL & Slip Indicator Lights On

So I start doing my research. Turns out "Slip Indicator light remains ON" has it's own .pdf on ncttora. Says The SLIP indicator blinks when any of the TRAC, VSV and AUTO LSD operate and stays on when the system fails. Says CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - COMBINATION METER) and INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY and REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID. Problem is when I had the guy at the autoparts store get the code for me it comes back as a manufacturer specific trouble code for P2197 Oxygen air fuel sensor signal stuck lean Bank 2, Sensor 1. (Which isn't on the freakin' list of codes sticky. What's up with that?) That's not on the pdf though either. So what gives? What does one have to do with the other? How does an O2 sensor effect the auto lsd?

 

So wouldn't that be the VSC OFF light? I mean, if the VSC shuts off, and it has its own specific light, why wouldn't Toyota use it? Makes no sense. I'm not ragging on you though, thank you for your in put, but that's down right stupid of Toyota.

 

Not to mention, why would Toyota shut down my vsc over an O2 sensor in the first place? Let alone what light they use for it. And then leave it out of the repair manual?

"We'll let people know when the vsc is off with a light on the dash. Unless it shuts down for a reason. Then we won't tell them the vsc is off, even if they happen to be driving at the time"

 

Both my "check eng light" AND the "slip" lamps lite up today. The codes are P0158 and P2197.

I know this sounds stupid to ask but ... "what could be the cause?"

My truck is a 2009, 27,800 miles and well babied.

Also it is cold...low 20's. I filled up 3 days ago, and put about 50 - 60 miles on since fill up. After the lights went on I did check the gas cap, and it was tight, but who knows since checking for tightness means "just tightening it".

It is snowy and the roads are slippery ... really find it hard to believe that if the VSC kicked it, it would throw a code for O2 sensors, but needed to mention all the facts.

Also find it REALLY hard to believe that a 2009 toyota with only 27,800 miles would have a O2 sensor go bad; hence my stupid question earilier ... "what could be the cause?"

I am wondering if any others had had the same codes and what your causes were. It has to be somthing simple (meaning I believe that the odds are it is not a bad sensors, but something else ... lose gas cap, cold weather, maybe a hot cat/pipe and a splash of cold slush ...etc.)

I need to get the comp. reset (autozone read the codes but forgot to clear them) and need to see it the computer reads a fault again or not.

P0158 = O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage Bank 2 Sensor 2
P2197 = O2 Sensor Signal Biased/Stuck Lean Bank 2 Sensor 1

Neither of those are related to the evap system, it's not the gas cap.
You COULD have a bad sensor, but since the codes are involving both sensors it is unlikely. Could be that a problem with one sensor could be throwing the other one off, but you have no way of knowing which one is bad.

Or it could be that the sensors are functioning perfectly and you actually do have a problem with the mixture on bank 2.

You have 27,000 on the truck, the emissions warranty is 70,000 miles. Get it to the dealer.

 

okay. good to know. I did not know for sure if the evap system was involved or not. I read some posts where they had more than one code (one code or the other the same as me) and some suggestions might be the evap system, in particular the gas cap. I thought it was unlikely, but you never know sometimes what could triger something else, especially since I am not a tech.

THANK YOU for telling me about the warranty on the emissions. Never even thought about it. I know the dealer would have said something to me when I bring it in, but now I don't have to fret about a cost.

I had the CEL & LSD warning lights come on simultaneously. After reading in this forum about the gas cap being a possible cause. I opened the fuel door and discovered that I forgot to reinstall the gas cap after filling up 24hrs prior. I installed the original gas cap, and the CEL & LSD warning lights disappeared. You may want to put a small amount of o-ring on your gas cap seal to ensure that you have a good seal, and that an old gas cap seal is not causing the problem. Just a suggestion....
