    UPDATE:
started using this guy and was pleased at first until 1. It started squeaking where the arm meets the mount. General lubricant seemed to fix it. 2. A crack formed where the arm seems to be secured to the mount. I think the weight of the phone bouncing up and down probably influenced that. Either way it didn’t seem to have much effect on its functionality.

Ended up ordering the same one again but this time I installed it a little farther back on the dash so that the arm barely rests on the dash and there I stuck some dime sized Velcro patches to kinda keep it from banging on the dash when driving. The suction to the dash and magnet to the phone are both VERY strong and now super happy with it. I like this product over most others because of its sleek design that doesn’t block my view through the windshield and I can easily charge my phone instead of reaching all the way to the A-pillar on the left side. Also definitely prefer the magnetic style since I can easily attach and remove my phone with one hand.
These pictures are of the first one, not the second.

Here’s mine, a ram ball mount bolted to the radio bezel with a short arm and an x-grip.

B3376409-3055-47D6-9058-A5A9C8E4CC20.jpg I like RAM stuff. Magnets or holders without a strong clamp I found to be insufficient when off road, my phone was always getting rattled onto the floor. The mount is a bike phone mount connected to a Ram double ball mount that I mounted to the dash and used a piece of UMHW shaped to the dash as a base.

I did have an idea of running my iPad, but realized it’s just not necessary when my phone does everything it does. I have an older Garmin 60CXS backpackers gps for off grid, though a good gazetteer and some smarts works just fine.AA480457-D0E9-4BB0-B515-E80D0A5F4971.jpg I ended up negating one of the cigarette lighter sockets and put in a Blue Sea usb fast charger which is great for recharging head lamps, led dog collars, etc and put a Blue Sea usb extension that connects my phone to my head unit so I can use Apple CarPlay.

Only thing better would be if it were possible to move the head unit higher in the dash as I’ve seen guys do with later first gens, but as far as I know it’s not possible with the mechanical heater controls on models prior to 01.

Unholy mount. You won’t regret it.
