You have to clean the area first with alcohol cleaner, if that doesn’t work just epoxy.
Mine has never come off in a year

I scrubbed the heck out of it with alcohol wipes, probably the cleanest that spots been in years. It just won't stick..dont want to epoxy it.

I made use of the empty switch plate just to the right of the steering wheel, above the clock you can't see.

I modified a cell phone holder that has a circular base that rotates. Took that apart and bolted the back (stationary end) to the switch plate, then reassembled it. Click it all back in place and you have a low profile rotating mount. Holds it pretty well too, never had it drop off even while wheelin'

    EDIT:

    here's the pic:

It's below the dash line so it doesn't obstruct the view outside at all, but still high enough where it's easily in your peripheral view.

On my other cars I used ProClip USA over the vent mount. I love their products - so solid, not a cheapo-china junk. But for Tacoma the vent mount is not available models with cap holders there. Pro Clip USA writes: "If you have a cup holder underneath the air vent, this mount will block it (ONLY a very few models of the Tacoma has this cup holder installed).". I am the lucky one with one of "very few models". So I went with "cheapo-china" windshield which feels cheap, it looks ugly, but holds my phone, so here I have one.

I can't put anything on the left side of vents as I have switches there. And I don't want to look down, so the only place is there (I am right handed so A-pillar mount is not for me)

My Pioneer 4200 has a 7" screen and with its screen tilt feature I can easily view Android Auto Google maps so no need for using or viewing my phone while driving

Looking at anything below vents is distracting (for me). I used to have my phone mounted in 4Runner at that height, and after some time I decided to change it for Pro Clip USA vent mount.

This is why I did not want to use Navigation on my dash unit.
