    Real question...I see talk about tire size as 35s or 33s, etc. What does that mean? I understand the different parts of a tire spec, but see nothing in my tire specification below that says anything about 35 or 33 or whatever that is. Is it the diameter of the tire??

    Oh...and here's my truck with these tires: BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 LT265/70R17 112S BK C 6

    Yup.
    ‘Pizza cutter’ 33s - 255/85/16 or 255/80/17 - are the biggest size you can fit on a stock 3rd gen without some mods being done. People are impressed by size and width though - the goal is usually to fit the biggest and widest tire possible (35s on a Tacoma without seriously heavy modding) - the bigger the tire the easier to roll over obstacles and greater lift you gain. An example of 37s;

    and whatever size this was (44s?);

    So where on the tire can you find the diameter? If it's not on tire how you get that number...just measure it??

    It's on the tire .. 265/70R17 in your case, is roughly converted to a 31.5 inch tall tire

    It is not physically ‘written’ on the rubber, if that’s what you mean. Too many variables for a manufacturer to write 33” on it and when it’s really a 22.6” - tires also wear down so a 33” by end of life may no longer be a 33” - and blah blah blah.
    As @32vsnake mentioned, the rubber width/height/rim roughly gives you a size anyway.

    Wheel diameter (in) + [2 * (Tire width (mm) * aspect ratio * .0394 in/mm)]

    Example for 265/70/17:

    17 in + [2 * (265mm * .7 * .0394in/mm)] = 31.6 in (Which is 31-1/2 in give or take)

    I too dislike when you have metric and English units involved. I was born in Puerto Rico where the distance markers are in KM and the speed signs are in MPH :notsure:, so I've had my good share of it.

    Usually normal tires are measured like you said, but is a bit odd because it mixes metric and US, 265/70R17 basically means 265mm (how wide the tire is) / 70% of the width of tire is the size of the sidewall / R17 means it is for a 17" rim/wheel.

    It seems like larger/off-road tires are measured in US more frequently. So 33" x 10.5" would be a 33" diameter tire with a 10.5" width. And then they usually specify the rim/wheel again that they fit on such as 16" or 17" etc.

    Someone correctly me if I'm wrong...
