Center console lid – Stiffer spring

    Now that I have added an organizer mesh to the underside of the lid on my center console, it no longer wants to stay up when I open it. Has anyone added a stiffer spring to the hinge area to solve this?

    I did the same...and my lid does the same... I havent yet tried a stiffer spring. Im not sure where youd get something like that since its not a run of mill kind of spring. Its looks like a circle with two arms correct?

    Yes it is. I messed with it a bit today and may have found a good solution. I took off the inner cover of the lid to reveal the spring by unscrewing the 5 little Phillips heads screws. I then grabbed one of the little arms of the spring and pulled it closed, while I shoved a small piece of metal behind it. In my case, I cut a penny in half and stuck it behind the top arm. This effectively increases the spring rate and seems to hold the lid fairly well now. I'm thinking the spring may stretch back out over time, but we'll see.

    Good idea using a spacer. I automatically thought replacement but its much easier to come up with a way to increase the rate of the existing spring rather than a new heavier one.

    Yeah I was thinking about replacement also but I couldn't seem to knock the pin out of the hinge to get the spring off. So I figured this was worth a shot, and it seems to have worked nicely.

    its called a torsion spring. pretty common. shouldnt be too hard to find. but the spacer idea seems easier
