Yeah, on ours at least the navigation buttons on the side of radio display (home, phone, track etc.) and the display in the dash etc are still controlled by the dashboard brightness display dial (odo reset) so to use any of this stuff I have to turn my lights on in a rain storm then go eff with the radio day mode then reach into my dash to turn my brightness all the way up.
Then when I get in my truck at night the next time, I am staring into the sun that is my dashboard.

Terrible design. Drives me absolutely nuts as it rains a lot and is state law to turn on headlights where I live. My cheap Ford Fiesta that’s years older automatically does all of this no problem.

Are you all leaving your headlights on auto? If that's the case, I'm wondering if any of you have messed with the setting that controls how dark it has to be for the headlights to turn on and displays to go into night mode? I had mine pretty high so it has to be fairly dark to switch to night mode...with it being that dark I can see the main display functions.

You should..... Go to setup - next screen to the right is vehicle - then vehicle customization - light settings - and then headlamp on sensitivity is there.

tried it with and without headlights on, I do not have tech package on mine so I don't have the auto headlights if that is the feature (I assume) it's referring to.

By removing the TAIL input to the Head Unit it stays at what ever light setting you choose during the daylight & rain. I don't know if that is still bright for you at night.

Mine adjusts brightness with the dash brightness knob that sticks out of the dash... Same brightness no matter what mode my headlights are set to.

Is this same wire what I could intercept by means of a switch to override day/night brightness settings? I hate turning headlights on for rain and not being able to see the HU. Ideally I'd like a 3 position switch (I think DPST? ON-OFF-ON) to make it bright whenever I want, dark whenever I want, or let the truck do its thing.

Well the bright whenever and dark whenever needs operator input. An ON-OFF switch would suffice in bypassing the TAIL input to the Head Unit.

What do you mean "operator input"? Input from a switch or some voltage signal triggered from a setting on the light stalk?

The brightness/dimmed setting needed/wanted needs to be set manually. But once the TAIL input is there or not it affects that setting.

I'm not understanding. Brightness/dimmed setting = what is set in the HU? Or do you mean the toggle state between daytime and nighttime HU brightness? I'm guessing that TAIL input is simply the signal the HU looks for to toggle between the day/night settings, hence why I thought an ON-OFF-ON switch would get the job done. What I don't know is what voltage triggers day vs night. I assume one needs 12v and I'm guessing it's the night setting, so I reckon I can just supply that 12v using a tap from elsewhere in the truck, same power source I'd use to light up the switch.

The Unit needs to be "brighter" during daylight. Once TAIL input is received, this daylight brightness in the head unit dims. Are you wanting the Head Unit to behave during the day as if it were night? (Dim), then yes a 12v DC source to a SPDT switch would do just that. The OP wants what ever setting chosen during the day & rain not to blind him at night. The removal of the TAIL input might be what is needed, since the Head Unit settings won't change because it's missing the Nighttime input from the TAIL (also illumination) circuit.

Bless you, may your children and your great grand children have glory for their entire lives.

Been trying to find this for my 2015 since the day we bought it. Driving through 'daylight safety zones' in the desert, having to have lights on when windshield wipers are going, can't see the back up camera without shutting off the light....

I am looking to override the TAIL input, since it sounds like that's the cue the HU looks for, to the HU to prevent the screen from dimming when I turn on lights.

ON-OFF switch or de-pin the terminal (taped it off after). No more TAIL input to Head Unit.

I never noticed this so I played with headlights on/off/auto in very bright sunlight today. Absolutely no difference to screen brightness including the buttons on the left ... always visible with good brightness and contrast. 2016 with tech package and JBL. Now when my passenger throws a map or hat on the dash, over the daylight sensor, that’s a different story.
