If I can get the truck in two weeks and 1500 off msrp. Then I don't mind. But if the deal doesn't go thru, I'll go to Merced Toyota and put a order in.

Hello everyone. This post was sent to me by a Tacoma friend and I had to join and reply. I am the General Sales Manager at a Toyota dealer and need to know where to find the $3-$5 extra we make below invoice. I am just like the rest of us and try to make my money go as far as possible but had to reply to a couple of the misconceptions on the forum. First...it isn't as easy as punching some things into the computer to make big bucks. First the homes the property was on had to be purchased....then leveled....then the new dealership was built, only to have Toyota mandate a "new" facility in order to be compliant....you can see where this goes. Making $250 to pay the internet only speaks to 1 of the 17 people in a typical dealership that is involved it getting you the truck. We are like any other company in the country not to mention California that has to budget for insurance premiums and PG&E (we just installed NEW energy efficient lights we purchased for over 100 fixtures lto light up the vehicles for you at night) workers comp and payroll for 150+ employees so they can provide for their families. Do you walk into a doctor's office and pay him for his time when he writes you a prescription in 5 minutes? No....you pay for the investment in his education he made, malpractice insurance, payroll, etc etc. And I have a sneaking suspicion that evryone on here thinks the big money we make is in sales? While we may sell a 100-200 new cars a month, our main business though is in servicing those cars and the 2,000+/- repair orders we open in the service department. The factory pays us just like a customer does and at the same rates....over $100 hour to fix your car under warranty. We love when you are covered under warranty because you as owners may treat the folks in service better since it isn't coming out of your own pocket. Our job in sales is to keep the service department full of customers and their cars, not to make an exorbitant amount of money per transaction and retire early. Did I mention that WE DON'T SET PRICES? All of us as consumers do. It is called supply and demand. I'm guessing most members think Toyota builds a great truck or else you wouldn't be on here and currently, the production is not as robust as we would like. We have more potential customers for these trucks than we do trucks. I think most of you understand that and get the basic economics. For those that don't....you determine what price the market will bear. As for the extra $3-$5k under invoice I can assure you it is a figment of someone's imagination. Yes we have holdback. Yes we get reimbursed for the delivery expenses and gas. But most dealers pay banks interest in order to have a selection of vehicles on the lot. If a dealer owns his cars outright....he may consider this profit. For most however....it helps pay their bills not pad their wallets. As some of you make note of on here....holdback is 2% of base MSRP. 2%? Tht sounds liek a pretty small number t make on a $35,000 investment for the dealer. If someone could send me a link to the money we are missing I would appreciate it. The burden is on all of us dealers to treat people with respect and make great relationships with our customers...it makes going home at night to our families much easier. Most dealers now do a fairly good job of it but the stigma everyone has against dealers needs to go away. We are just like you. Sometimes however the biggest fibbers are the customers. In the end, I'm not against shopping for the best price like the rest of you but wish customers were as well informed as they think they are. UPDATE- I dont have a single Tacoma on the lot and most of my incoming units are already spoken for with deposits. When nobody wants one....the prices will come down, but in the meantime....take it easy on your local dealer and realize they want you as happy as you would like to be. You all should be happy Toyota makes such a great rig. Thanks for letting me vent!

Let's be honest. I get paid less for flying airplanes then the guy my wife pays to give her a message. This country is built on the premis on how to screw the other guy. Supply and demand. It's how we do it here in Murica! That being said, some guys and organizations know how to benefit from other's greed. To each there own!

Hello! Thank you for your interest in our dealership! What truck are you interested in purchasing? Are you open to any model Tacoma or something special? We have a few TRD Sport models coming in next week. Would you be interested in a TRD Sport model in Barcelona red or quicksand?

Please let me know at your earliest convenience. We need to get your name on the list quick if you wish to hold one of these vehicles. There will be a 4900 dollar special order fee if you want either of these TRD Sport models. Be sure to 'scoop' up these savings quick!

I think everyone knows most of that or has a basic idea anyway. I think part of the problem is that the whole dealership model is a sort of archaic relic that doesn't fit into consumer's expectations for modern business. I think people find that frustrating and take some pleasure in complaining and making assumptions about how bad it really is behind the curtain. Personally, I appreciate my dealer and I try to treat everyone there with respect. That doesn't mean I own them a higher price if I can get it cheaper someplace else. If some other dealer finds a way to sell me a truck for $500 less than the place across town, I'm going for a drive. I'm not getting anything if I spend that extra $500 (or freak'n $5k "market adjustment" as some folks are finding in SoCal). My local dealer will still make money off my service work and they can still sell me a truck if they provide a price that doesn't give me a reason to drive someplace else. I WANT to support my local dealer, but I'm not going to make the equivalent of a donation.

That probably doesn't address your main point that there is a lot more to selling cars than hitting a few buttons. I agree, and I think the post by Z50king was oversimplified and his numbers are questionable. If that was your main point, then I will say "OK, sure." To me, or most aggressive buyers, none of that matters (including whatever Z50king says for the most part*). I really only care about the out the door price for what I want. I don't think you would care about the details or complexity of my finances as long as I have the money or qualify for financing. You want to sell it for the highest price you can get and I understand that. It's a sum-zero situation and I don't know any knowledgeable buyers who have misunderstanding about that arrangement. I've never really felt any sympathy from anyone selling me a car, I don't know why you would expect it in return.

Also note, this is the 3rd Gen forum and it's a bit snarky in here. You can't really internet here if you are going to get upset when someone says something wrong or stupid.

    * Note: I may or may not agree, but Z50king can say whatever he wants as far as I'm concerned. Also, I have no idea why I'm wasting my time with this response.

Thank you for your response. When I said all they are doing is hitting a few buttons, I was referring to these sales that are orders. They don't have to finance the car if they can't buy it outright and pay points on it while it sits on the lot. They don't have to pay a salesman to try to sell it to multiple people. I have contacted them asking to order a truck. All they have to do is find it, PDI it, and do the paperwork when I get there to pay them. It won't sit on the lot. It won't be there for a month. I won't bother them trying to buy it. I'm sure there are other people in the background who make this happen, but this is much less work than sitting on a truck trying to sell it.

North Hollywood Toyota offered to order me a 7568 for $5000 over MSRP, if anyone cares to know who he is referring to in the above writing.

Please see the original post, as I edited if today. Greg called me and basically said there is not enough time in the day to answer all the internet generated questions he is receiving. Today is his day off btw and he just asked for me to apologize to everyone. Since Its indirectly my fault for giving the world his personal contact info, he asked that I commuicate all this to you.
