Central Florida/Bay area Taco friendly trails?

I'm new to Off Roading and I'm looking for in sight on locations. Any one here from central Florida more west coast side?

I don't know of places really and I'm still in the learning phase but I wanna not only do things right I want to do them legally. I know of a few places but they aren't legal as it's privately owned property however it's a common stomping ground, that's not what I'm looking to do as I think that makes the responsible people look bad.

Anyone from the area or know of any good places to check out that a Tacoma would be good for?

 

Welcome to TW and the Florida comunity, there's quite a few trails to do mostly "off-roading" in Florida means swamping mudding and sand, but check out Holder mine campground trails, we just had a get together out there, there's also Ocal National Forest, and right by there is the Hardrock Off-road vehicle park. There's another ORV park in south Florida that I can't recall right now.

Do a google maps search for Off road parks or state forests and find their pages and look for trail maps.

Where bouts in FL are you?

 

I'm in Central central, right between Orlando and Kissimmee. I'm not quite a newbie but not super experienced either. Meaning I know just enough to get really really stuck, and then unstuck myself. Lots of experience in digging and stacking. Lol.

 

Oh I know how to get stuck lol not very well versed on the getting out part but so far that only happened on the farm with a tractor handy

 

Boy I could have benefited from having a tractor handy many a time.

 

My goal is to avoid the need! But that was after digging too, very nasty practically lake mud. Also on the stock "all-terrains" not my best decision to try in 2wd. By the time 4lo locked I had a very stuck truck lol now I've learned (been told) to just keep in 4wheel when off the pavement

 

Get with some of the guys on the next hardrock trip, that place will build confidence in yourself and show you a little if your with the right people. Just saw one today for November 11th I think, could have been on our Facebook page. Try there too, it's Florida Tacomas on facebook

 

I usually wheel in 2wd till it starts to get mushy or I get just a little stuck 4wd to keep going and then, my locker I generally try to save for an emergency backup plan to reverse out of "fuck soup" as I have come to call it. Doesn't always work.

Looks solid or dry on top, then... "Fuck, it's soup."

Main thing is to keep calm, read the terrain and do not panic, also when you get stuck pay close attention and if you're not moving STOP DIGGING YOURSELF DEEPER!!! Get out look around find what wheel is slipping and why and see what you can do about it.

I have invested in a very good set of Muck boots for this, and my little D-Handle shovel has paid for itself many times over. Buried myself to the frame once or twice.

Also I learned recently from an old hand at wheeling, when in mud stay in 4high you need wheel speed to clear the tires more than you need the locker or 4low.

Lastly best offroading advice I ever recive from the old guys who ran the Camel Trophy world overland series in their Landrovers: "As slow as possible, as fast as necessary"

Maintain momentum when needed but don't blindly floor it into obstacles.
