    Curt:

No problem here with your posts in this thread. I for one am thankful for the work you and other Law Enforcement professionals do for us as citizens.

Some DB's just do not realize what it would be like without someone, such as yourself, stepping up and risking it all to protect us.

And to the OP, in Maryland it is a privilege to drive not a right. Any LEO can pull you over to check your licenses and registration. I am pretty sure that when you are pulled over you are doing something that endangers the lives of others.

Sometimes I really, really want to post. And then I realize I'd be :frusty: and a lot of :poking: and also some :deadhorse:

No problem with cops in general, happy with cops who work hard, not happy with cops who are jerks. Seems universal to everyone, even cops themselves seem to think this way?

So suffice to say I will simply watch the thread go by except to say that police officer (and teacher) pay is a tired, tired argument (also it's rarely cops I hear making such an argument). I had a job where the pay was inadequate. I went back to school, retooled, and I literally make about 12x now what I did then. If a cop doesn't like his pay I am not going to feel sorry for him, he should get a different job. Likewise with the danger factor; it's an accepted part of the job. I could be killed at my job tomorrow, too. Lots of people could. We accept the possibility, otherwise we wouldn't be working there. No one is conscripted to work at their job.

Being married to a teacher I can say that they do not teach for the money. They live for the challange to help young children grow into responsible adults.

I'm not lurking, just thinking of what to say as to not add fuel to the fire.
Do I agree with the guy in the video, yes and no.
1.I'll start with the no. I use to do interstate driving for 6 years. I crossed multiple BP check points, weight stations, etc every day. I have NEVER been sent to secondary. Why? because I roll down my window, remain calm, and answer 1 or 2 questions knowing that the officer has no care about the actual answer, just how well my answer comes out. Smooth and confident, or did I hesitate and second guess the answer.
    2. I almost never have anything illegal or anything to hide, but I will never let a peace officer search my vehicle unless I have actually given reason for them to do so. I was burned as a teenager for this, and will not be burned voluntarily again. (got pulled over for speeding, cop asked to search and I said sure, and he found a six pack I had for later that night. I'll leave it at that.)
    3. Video. Our trucks were equipped with 8 cameras and microphones. It was policy to activate these every time we entered a check point, station or were stopped. This was for everyone's protection as there are bad people in positions of power. If these were smaller and cheaper I would have a setup on the taco, even though a year of ownership and i have not been pulled over once. This guy has multiple videos, and in one he says he drives to California from Texas many times a month so I believe filming them is not unreasonable.

I'm not necessarily complaining. And yes, I could go to a different agency where the pay and benefits are better. I would have to start over and lose my seniorty (to include job security) and work my way back up. I have 10 and a half years with this agency. This means that my position is safe and all I have to do, is keep from seriously screwing up. I'm definitely not in this career for the money either. I was simply stating an opinion about what we are exposed to, compared to the compensation that some agencies provide. I'm not asking for anyone to feel sorry for me either. If I could afford to stop working go back to school full or even part time, believe me, I would. However, this career best suits my personality and my abilities. I have a servant heart and have always made a good "foot soldier" than a person who's in upper management, so to speak. I am blue collar and am happy being blue collar.

I understand this. About half my family members are teachers. I like teachers. I had a few amazing teachers, and a lot of pretty good ones. If any of them really had a problem with their pay I assume they'd quit and do something else. A lot of them do. :)

Not a problem bethes. The internet is, at best, a very difficult place to have a conversation. Our body language and voice tones do so much to convey our feeling and one cannot do this on the internet.

I pointed that ouy cause the Sunflower said that he actually deterred illegals unlike the BP who sits at checkpoints 80 miles north and bother U.S. citizens. Im sure most LEO are adrenaline junkies.

While I agree with DUI checkpoints making the roads safer and, in fact, if you read your DMV book you actually agree to alcohol tests as part of your driver's license agreement, I'm a bit less convinced of the constitutionality of inland border patrol checks.

However, I do see why they are needed a hundred or so miles inland. I've done quite a bit of field work along the border and it's pretty easy to cross in many places. However, as you travel north you eventually run out of open country and trails and have to funnel into a highway if you are going to continue. I have a family member who lives in southern New Mexico and she says that many ranchers there have huge problems with the masses of illegals and drug smugglers on their land.

Like I said, I've spent some time along the border doing research and while I was stopped numerous times at checkpoints I was always on my way in less than 5 minutes -- less time than I've spent at the agricultural checkpoints going into California or the tollbooths in the Great Lakes region.

I agree that you're exposed to a lot of danger. Good lord, you could get shot over a speeding ticket. How effed up is that? But still, you accept it.

I'm like you in a way, I doubt I'll ever be much of a manager. I like doing things, being hands on, and training other people to do the job right. I hate meetings and gladhanding people, and that's what managers in my field (and I think most fields) do. Sounds horribly boring. :)

In fact, I think you should hit the gas as soon as you see lights in the rear view mirror.
