I broke one as well. They don't like cranked coils much.

Ya because then you get coil bind which results in all the force moving to the top hat. This could be an Icon problem because they use a 13" coil rather than everyone else that runs a 14". Their top hat could actually be weak, or both of these. Probably both haha

I run a 14'' spring with basically no preload and mine still broke so I would say the later.......

Or all of our bumpstops were setup improperly :notsure:

I am almost tempted to reach out to everyone who has broken one, My coilovers were out of warranty so I had to pay for the replacement part which I have mixed feelings about. One hand its out of warranty and thats just it, on the other hand a part failed that shouldn't have especially with what I consider normal use 90% of the time its driven. If it goes un noticed (very possible since my wife drives the truck most of the time) and my coil bucket looked like this once I noticed it and was told whatever your coilover is out of warranty I would be pretty pissed

That picture is a little extreme but even something like this I wouldn't be happy about. Lessons learned though, Ill just add them to the list

Would coil bucket gusset plates that some companies make even prevent somehing like that? I could see bypass mount possible lowering the chance of destroying your coil bucket.

I have the @dirt designs coil bucket hats that have a provision for a cross brace and secondary shock mount tubes and it’s easy to say that I think they would help but only in prolonging the inevitable. The overlooked weak link in the design is still going to appear eventually.

Really they need to consider a different material for the top hat or a different design, once that breaks you are pretty much out of service either way since you really dont have anything keeping the top of the coilover in place besides the weight of the truck.

Truck sits a lot lower than i was planning with the stock shocks, about a finger gap before bump lol

Agreed. Definitely an issue in design that Icon needs to fix. Just curious if having some of the bracing would at least keep the coil bucket from cracking or bending to the point that it would pretty much total a vehicle from an insurance prespective I would think.

possibly yes, but if your coilover is unsupported from he top and the truck droops enough to where the coilover falls outside of the coil bucket you are fucked anyways. Id be curious what insurance would do for a bent coil bucket, usually they just replace but at that point its the frame

True. I've seen so many Icons like this over the past 3 years that I wonder what the ratio of failed components is. I'm not sure what to process is for replacing a coil bucket, but I would guess it would be a easy total being that it's the fram like you said.

After I broke one I kept a spare assuming it would happen again. It didn't. The Aluminum doesn't flex, but the tower sure does and something has to give. Adding a second shock in there with a brace REALLY helps stiffen it up, and takes some of the load off of the coilover itself. After adding the second shock hoop I never had another one break.

Thats a good point about the bucket flexing itself, so I guess a coil bucket mount may help more than what I would imagine.

Took the truck out for a short drive to see how it was on stock coils, Its a little too low and hit the bumps every time I turned or a bigger bump so I went back home after this to pull the front bumper off to relieve the stock coils of the extra weight. I have both trucks out of town so thats the reasoning behind doing some of this stuff, I have to get it home for monday

    Low Rida!

How's the weight of the deck + canopy compared to your stock bed and topper? Pretty well the same?

Nots not an exact science but judging by the leafs compared to the HC bumper, factory bed, and topper the tray and canopy weighs less. Normally my overloads are flat as could be and now i can see between them, actually my leafs are a little deformed from sitting on the overloads for so long

So maybe 50-100lbs lighter? I forgot about the 140 pounds of HC steel!

I've been hunting for ways to lighten up the rear and get my center of gravity down. RTT up high is hurting. I may even ditch the ruggedized tent for a regular one, and make a bedrack that sits a good 8" lower than my current set up. Would be nice to get lower down for clearing all the big branches and fallen trees around here too.

So many trade offs whichever way you go. Your set up is ideal, but not in the cards right now for me!

Yeah it’s always a battle between having luxuries and weight. I like this set up, I’m excited to get the interior but it’s sounding like my interior won’t be ready in time to make this shipment. I may turn to building the interior myself for the time being

At this point I’m not sure, i sold my two RTTs so now I don’t have any. Ideally i would like to get into building RTTs out of aluminum but I’m a little unsure at this point. My next project will be a camper of sort just need to get the funds together
