No, not at all. I've ripped 4 or 5 boots on my taco...but it also has 363,000 miles on it....but you just grease up the input shaft, where the seal rides on, so the seal doesn't run dry. Eventually, everything wears out.

Just replaced the seal to mine after having the axle out because we couldn't get it out and ended up tearing the seal in the process. Bought my seal from Toyota because I couldn't find it anywhere for my 08 ($18). Make sure you rent a seal puller from O'Reillys or somewhere to make It much easier. I'd also recommend putting some seal grease around the edge of it to make it easier for the seal to go in and out. Also rented a tool (Like stated above, about 2" PVC pipe will probably work) to push the seal back in there evenly with a hammer. Wasn't too bad of a job. You want to make sure you at least rent the seal puller though imo.

Seal Puller (rent with a slide hammer as well to reverse hammer it out)

Make sure all the bolts around the seal on the rear diff are tight, I noticed a tiny bit of seepage awhile back and a few of those bolts were a little loose.

Be prepared if you plan to attempt an oil pan replacement. That’s a lot of work. Did that repair as well. Living in the Midwest has its pitfalls....road salt being a big one. My oil pan rusted out and oil leaked through the perforations. I used epoxy to coat it but that didn’t last long. The TSM will guide you through that one. For me, that one ranked about an 8 on the “F” bomb scale of difficulty. Especially without assistance :)
