I thought I had it bad in California until I moved to South Carolina, $976 for property tax (registration) per year.

I'm guessing you didn't grow up in California. When I was a kid we had regular bad air days where we couldn't go to recess. This was in the 1960's. In the 1950's I lived in So Cal. My mom says there were days that were so smoggy that she couldn't see 2 blocks. 2 blocks. Clean air isn't free if we insist on driving cars. I'm glad to pay a bit for pollution controls.

Do you get insurance with that ? Do you pay that every year?

Insurance is not included . It's based on the value of the vehicle so it goes down every year.

Dang, we have a $97 yearly licensing fee then basic insurance you have to get. My cost is $744 for that for my 2013.

Please keep your hate to yourself. He posted something that was useful knowledge to us that live and pay our taxes (and truck registration fees and smog test fees) here in this great state.

Each state has their way of getting your money. Registration in Colorado was just as expensive, each year they had a "luxury vehicle tax". If I had a 40k tundra then I was nearly a grand to register the truck. Arizona charges me $700 to register our Armada, $500 for the Tacoma.

The gov will get your money regardless where you live. Get used to it.

In Oklahoma it cost me $1,500.00 for excise tax when I went to register it new in 2018. This year it only cost me $97.00. No smog on inspection here either.

Let’s not forget VA and their state inspections where they’ll fail you for led reverse lamps.

So instead of paying for a smog on a fairly new vehicle that will surely pass, I pay a similar fee which will go toward a program that will definitely help clean the air. A tax that actually make sense? Gtfo.
