Correct. Old law would require you to smog in 2022. Now your first smog won't be required until 2024.

Born and raised here in this "wonderful state". While there are many positives I can't wait to get out of here to escape the stifling regulations and confiscatory taxes. Only 17 years until retirement! I agree with @Anchovy, I think he's right. However, to avoid the "no politics" banhammer, as Forrest Gump says, "that's all I have to say about that."

On the OT, I think this is good news that the smog check time frame has been extended. It seems pointless to hit up new vehicles so soon anymore - this isn't the 1980s where everything was vacuum lines and crude solenoids or actuators. Also, in those days cars ran better if you pulled off the air injection, catalytic converters, carburetor mixture restrictor plates, etc. I agree that the smog program here in the Los Angeles area has been an unmitigated success - when I was a kid I remember "first stage" or "second stage" smog alerts where you couldn't see the San Gabriel Mountains from 15 miles away. Running on the track (Jr. High School) resulted in chest pain when you were breathing. We used to have "No P.E. days" whenever there were smog alerts. It was really bad.

On the point of unleaded gas, catalytic converters became required equipment in 1976. Before that only PCV valves and air injection (1974 requirement) were the law. You couldn't run regular leaded gas with a catalytic converter, hence the need for unleaded. At the time not many people wanted to have hardened valve seats installed on their cylinder heads hence the need for the leaded gas. I remember destroying catalytic converters and knocking out the fuel restrictor in the gas inlet in order to save the $0.15/gallon of gas to get the cheaper leaded variant. (The statute of limitations has long since expired! hah!) While not very environmental of me it really made the car run a lot better since the smog abatement technology at the time was so crude it tended to choke the life out of the engine performance. Nowadays, cars are designed to run with pollution control and I wouldn't even dream of disabling/removing the cats, O2 sensors, etc. I only wish CARB wasn't as restrictive for us here in CA for some common sense modifications - it seems to be based more upon their extortion of the manufacturer rather than actual emissions level. What can you do, right?

Great post. Serious question.....Why are you planning to live in California for 17 years if you can’t wait to get out? Why not move to the better place with better opportunities now?

Yep, all my life. There is absolutely nothing I would like to do in life that I can’t do in California. Throw in the super economic opportunities, most beautiful weather and most diverse and beautiful scenery, California living is a no brainer for me.

I can mud bog, rock crawl, snow wheel, desert trail and beach drive. All in the same day if I wanted.

California is mostly conservative, by area. Not population.

My job/family obligations are here. Trust me, if they come up with relocation to a better state I'm in! I don't want to stay the entire 17 years if I can, I'm really ready to wipe off the CA dust from my shoes sooner rather than later.

Got it. That makes since. California does have great job opportunities that can be hard to match elsewhere.

I don’t plan to leave California. If I did, I suspect my income would drop dramatically.

That's why I like driving my 72 Camaro here in Calif , the cops just wave at me or give a thumbs up and never bother me even with a personalized plate that says I drag race

Now this isnt anywhere near stock with a NHRA Cert 8 point cage , tin interior , race seats and running drag radials out back with skinny 15x3 tires/wheels up front . Also getting a 600hp 406 built that should be ready in April
