My 2006 4-cylinder 2WD has standard two-speed wiper system. I need to change this out to an intermittent/variable speed wiper system.

I read some thread on this topic regarding 2009 Tacoma but am unsure if that applies to 2006 Tacoma.

Any advice on this procedure? Installation guidance? Part number? Degree of difficulty? Many thanks for any information.

I believe all you need to do is order the stalk from a truck with intermittent wipers.

If you look up any 2nd gen truck with a TRD package for sale it will definitely have the stalk, so you could use that VIN to get the part number. That or you can probably find the number on a thread here. As far as I know, '05-'15 should all be the same.

The wiper stalk is interchangeable across all years, but the direction of the rotary ring was flipped for '09 and later trucks. (i.e. '05-'08, rotating the ring upward made the wipers move less frequently; '09-'15, rotating the ring upward made the wipers move more frequently)

I just swapped mine last week. Nothing to it. Being paranoid I disconnected the battery. Seriously though it is extremely easy to do. I ordered my stalk from Amazon.

BTW, Nessmuk, what year is your Tacoma, and what part number did you order from Amazon?

FYI, if you quote or tag the person, they will get a notification. If you don't, they may never see your message.

Just put an "@" symbol before their name to tag them, like this: @Nessmuk

@js312 Much obliged. I'm obviously new to this forum, but it's been extremely useful, helpful

Yup, it'll show up as a notification in the top right when you do that.

A few years back, I wanted intermittants, and made this upgrade. I got the stalk from a 3rd-gen 4runner at at pick-n-pull. Bolted right in and works perfectly.

Amusingly, that new stalk also includes controls for the rear window wiper and washer !! :D

This is a follow-up ending to my request for information in replacing a standard wiper stalk with an intermittent stalk, FYI.
I ended up ordering part number 84652-04141 from Japanese Truck Dism (out of Wilmington CA) for $74, free shipping. JTD was very responsive and fast. I was a bit reluctant to purchase a used part, but it came -- apparently at least -- in fine condition.
This was Not a 5 minute job. True, two screws secure the top and bottom plastic steering wheel column cover, but after the wiring harness was disconnected from the standard stalk it was a bit of a struggling pain to unlock the stalk and pull it out.
The intermittent stalk was a bit "thicker" (extra electronics for the intermittent I assume) and fitting this "thicker" stalk back through the opening of the spread plastic steering wheel colum covers and into the harnessing clips was a challenge (so as not to break any plastic parts).
However, I succeeded. In addition to the phillips and flat head screw drivers, I needed a good hands-free light -- I needed lots of light (black parts, dark space) and both hands.
    In the end, total success.
Just thought ya'll like to know. Thanks for all your intputs.

There is a guy who sells used units on the forum for like 80-90 bucks shipped. Of course his units are in mint condition. Took maybe 30 mins to install it.

GGrrrr....When I bought my 2014 new, I asked the dealer if they could convert the 2 speed wipers to variable....they said " It can't be done" The real frustration is this brain dead Option should have been standard equipment long before 2014....I'm not getting the mindset of a company that is suppose to be so tech savvy....
