Doesn't matter who manufactured the car. Don't take the battery out when a car is running. It's that simple.

Welcome to TW. Dead horse beating is just a daily thing here, especially when someone fights for a wrong answer.

Here's the story. I went out to the garage to get tools to work on my stingray bike. The tool box was on a shelf above the workbench. I was only twelve years old so it was difficult for me to get the toolbox off that shelf but I was determined to get it down. While climbing down with the toolbox in hand I lost my footing and dropped it right on top of the fully charged, brand new battery my dad bought for his truck. The last thing I saw before the explosion was a bright flash when the toolbox touched the battery posts. Then there was a loud boom followed by complete silence. I don't know how I didn't get hit with shrapnel but I did get a lot of battery acid on me so I ran out the back door and jumped into the swimming pool. The temporary hearing loss was a blessing when my Dad came out to see what the f**k just happened. Yes, I was very lucky!

LJ, many thanks for sharing your story. So the metal tool box shorted across the terminals and the battery exploded internally from the pressure build up due to the rapid current discharge. Your quick thinking jumping in the pool saved you from some very serious chemical burns and months of recovery. This is one of the reasons why some battery manufacturers put plastic caps on the terminals of new batteries and connecting the positive terminal first before connecting the negative terminal when installing a car battery.

I disconnected the battery in my 2014 for approximately 15 min and the radio still had all the presets. I was surprised.

Seen plenty of ASE techs perform hot swaps.

Actually have see this at a toyota dealership and other factory dealers

Not saying this is correct but it is not out of the norm. Some traditions of the past are hard to stop.

It is becoming more common to use a memory tender in the 12v access port.

Yes, but the key must be in the on position.
