No dude. You cannot substitute Motor oil, for gear oil.

Sorry, I was reading up on it, and it's viscosity equivalents are the same as a 15W40. But I'm guessing that gear oil has other shit in it correct?

Thanks Chris and brianr! Just finished mine, no problems although I forgot to warm up the new oil a bit before filling. No biggie as it's about 50ºF here now, just made it take a few minutes longer than it should. 27k miles and the old oil was still pretty clear, I was surprised. Cheap insurance, nonetheless.

Well, after taking the truck to a colder climate I was hearing groaning and chirping when the diff was cold. After a mile or 2 it went away. Today I changed the oil again and will post up if it helped.

The first change I thought I was using conventional Valvoline 80w-90 gear oil and the LSD additive pictured on page one. However I experienced problems. Today I bought the cheap 80w-90 conventional gear oil and Champion LSD additive. hopefully that solves my issue.

Strange i used the same Valvoline oil with Posi Trac additive and never had problems. Maybe it was not enough additive.

I want to change my transfer and diff. But I just want to make sure buy the right oil and fill to the correct levels.

    I have a 09 trd dbl cab..

Do I fill the diff until the oil comes out the top hole? and then the transfercase, do put in 3qts?

Thanks, I just dont want to make a big mistake. This will be my first time doing this.

    Thanks

Only put the amount in that the owners manual states.

Ok thanks.. Can I just get some clairification please. I have been reading many pages on this subject. So is Royal Purple ok to use for all 3 areas (front, rear and transfer) on my 09 trd? Or is Red line, or Mobil 1 the perferd choice?
Thank you very much for taking the time.

As long as you use the correct gear lube formulation, it doesnt really matter what brand you run.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
I put in Redline because they make a oil in the correct weight for the Toyota's. However alot of others use Mobile 1 and some even use the Royal Purple and most have good results.

    Question...

I was going to buy oil for the rear/front diff and transfer case but all the oil they had said that it had "Limited Slip" formula. Some just had LS on it. Is it ok to use this as I have an OR with locker?

Yes, You can use that. The "LS" only means that its safe for use in an Limited Slip Diff. It doesnt have the friction modifyer in it. I belive that was covered in this thread. ;)

Ok thanks, so far everything seems cool. It was very easy to do. I still have to front and tranfercase left. To cold now. Heck I even replaced my plugs same day. That was easy also.
Next time I will try redline. I have over 100 miles withe the RP and it seems fine. I dont hear any noise what so ever.
Glad for this forum and the people who take the time to help.
