Changing differential fluid - A step by step "HOW TO"

Chris, I live in Louisiana at the moment but will likely me moving to Pacific Northwest in the next 6 months. Is it okay to keep the 140 in there or should I change it out once I move to the colder climate? Also, since I have the 4x4, should I use the Oil with LSD added?

need a hand as well. I'm getting ready to do my 30k service- converting to Mobil 1 oil & i'd like to go synthetic on all fluids. read a ton of posts, but i'm still not sure what to use on the front & rear differentials? Mobil 1 as well? i have a 2010 DC 4x4 TRD Sport w/ auto LSD if it matters.

Maybe I'm just a pussy but my filler plug seems to be completely locked up, it's not budging anywhere. Any ideas

What are you using? Wrench or socket?

Need a cheater bar for leverage

 

Wrench. My bigger sockets are at the garage, which I don't want to drive to cause I got some water in dat der rear diff. I'll keep strugglin then

 

Get a breaker bar and a 6 point socket.

Just finished my 30,000 mile service- couldn't have done it without this and other TW forums. Thought i'd pass along a helpful tool that i made from random parts in the garage. Made putting in the gear oil much faster & easier.

Took an old hose & cut it down to 6ft or so. Inserted a 3/8in threaded pipe into the cut end of the hose & secured it with a hose clamp.


It screws directly into the rear differential fill hole- same thread pattern.


cut the bottom off a 1 QT bottle of Mobil 1 & screwed onto the other end of the hose.


I pulled the hose through the wheel well and strapped the M1 bottle to my ladder rack & viola! fast & easy.

 

I fill the diff until it comes out the fill whole. How do you know when the diff is full with the hose screwed into it ? Thanks.

 

That's the one downside. i knew it took 3 quarts- just added all 3, let it sit for a while & then unscrewed the hose and checked the level visually with a flashlight.

I was planning changing my rear differential oil with Mobil 1 is that a good choice or would Redline or Royal Purple be better? I know it's a preference, but do the experts here on the forum suggest and also would I need to add the lsd additive, if so how much (ounces)? Thanks

 

I used M1,

$30 75w 90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w 90 synthetic.... Wanted to use 75w 140 but too much $$$

 

I put in Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90.

 

I'm using Mobile 1
