The LS diff in your truck, is operated by brake application, not a mechanical assembly in the diff.

Thx. That explains it. I read the manufactuer's sale sheet and the standard equipments list shows Auto LSD but i don't see the LSD sticker on my car.

Hi Chris . Is this the same on a 2011 TRD OFF ROAD prerunner ? If so then I don't need any additive , correct ?

From my searchh, I think Toyota stopped using mechanical LS in all Tacomas, starting 09. Their maint. guide says to replaced at 30k only with LS option is misleading. I guess they never bother to change the manual.

Anyway, I changed mine yesterday and the old fluid, at 30k, looked and smelled just like the new one.

    Yes...

Mobile 1 never put friction modifiers in their oil. They just changed the 'advertising' on the bottle to say its LS compatible.

Some other gear oil manufacturers do put friction modifiers in the oil (Amsoil Severe Gear - for example). Because you don't have a mechanical LSD, you could use either oils (with or without friction modifier) and you'd be fine.

It's only those folks who have the mechanical LSD who have to make sure the oil has friction modifier in it (or add it).

Thanks for this thread. I changed out the rear differential oil on my 2007 Tacoma this afternoon. I think the dealer got it during a service a few tens of thousands of miles ago but I like getting back into doing this sort of maintenance myself.

As long as the weight is right it should be good, AFAIK.

Ok thanks guys I was planning on running the 75-90 Royal Purple SYNTHETIC. The whole LSD additive talk was getting me confused as to if I needed it or not.

If you are in a 13 you do not have to add the additive.

I have a 2013 DC Sport and I'm a bit confused. For the Sport model beings it greater than 2011, I don't need the 4 ounces of LS additive correct? So the mobil1 70w-90 will be fine to use right? Or do I need the 70w-90 LS? Thanks!

you don't need the additive, and any of the oils you posted we'll be fine.

Hey guys. New Tacoma owner here. Just picked up a 2011 DCLB 4x4 Sport. It's got 91K and was thinking about doing some maintenance on it. What is needed for the front/rear diff oil change? Thanks in advance.

Hi all, I'm sure the answer to my question is somewhere in the 1,808 previous posts in this thread, but I can't find it. I have an '09 regular cab 2wd manual trans. My owners manual says the oil capacity in my differential is 3.66 quarts. I drained out the old (which was roughly that amount) and pumped in a full four quarts - and it never did run back out of the top hole where you add it. Do I need to add even more? Have I already put too much? This is an '09, so it's an open diff (first year for the electronic limited slip via brakes)... no locker or mechanical limited slip mechanism in the diff. Maybe the diff. holds more oil without that stuff in there and they neglected to update the manual? WTH?

Just to confirm: I have a 2011 Tacoma Sport DCSB. Based on the write-up, I do NOT need to use the LSD additive. Is that correct? Thanks!

I put in mobil1 75w90 LS in my 07 tacoma with lsd and i'm getting a little judder at slow speeds. I realize this mobil1 has LSD advertised so should I add a 7oz bottle of Trans-X or leave it be? Any harm in adding it? also should i add 4oz or 7oz?

    Thanks

from the first post: (for you guy like me w/ the Sport model, you'll need a 4oz. tube of LSD additive).
