Thanks i missed that. The Mobil1 LS oil has the modifier in it already but i assume it is not enough and more needs to be added?

Also the manual states it takes 3qt however I was unable to get a full 3qt to fill it without spilling out the fill plug. Why is the manual not giving the exact amount like the oil capacity?

Quick question: I have put in 3 quarts in the rear diff thus far and none is running out, aka doesn't appear to be full. Continue adding more until it runs out?

OK, so I see manual says 3.6qt so I'll keep going. Answered my own question.

A few mods here and there and counting....
My buddy gave me a box of mobil 1 75w90 gear oil, enough to do front/transfer/rear. I have 07 DCSB SR5 4x4 at 120k. Would it be safe to use the mobil 1 synthetic stuff?

Bought my truck with 80k on it a couple months ago and this weekend I wanted to change all of the oils because I figured the past owners did not. Well I was right the oil was dark and milky.

Funny how people can not read the first page. It has all the information needed.

So, i read like the first 10 pages of this thread. I just got 4.56s installed from East Coast Gear Supply and they heavily recommended AGAINST using synthetic for diff fluid. They said they never use it and the most rebuilds for tacomas are people who say they use syntheic and Royal Purple diff fluid. They use Lucas 85W-140 gear oil, which is what I bought extra of to change the oil after the initial 500 mile break in period. I know they may get some deal for buying lucas in bulk probably, but after hearing that most issues come from synthetic, Im def stayin away from it (in the diffs). Just my experience with the topic, feel free to pitch in anyone. . .

    Sorry so late with posting....
Mobile1 LS DOES NOT have friction modifier in it. The LS only means its 'compatible' for LS differentials. It's the same exact oil as the bottle that's not labeled as LS.

I have a 2007 Sport and use Mobile1 75Wx90. The first time I started using Mobile 1(26,000 miles), I used 2 bottles of XL3 modifier (from Ford dealer). This last time (59,000 miles), I only put 1.5 bottles in.

Started with 1 bottle....ran a 'work in' routine, and kept adding more until the rumbles stopped.

Ok so I did this and the oil started to drain out, I put the full plug back in. Let it drain back. Pulled the plug back out, still drained out of the filler hole but I cant feel a level with my finger which should be at the bottom of filler hole

Thanks guys for the awesome post I changed out my rear today in about 35 minutes. Fluid came out looking almost brand new with a small amount of gunk on the magnet. This is right at 80k. Not sure if the previous owner did it or not. But I know in the last almost 60k I haven't.

My issue is I only picked up 3 quarts. Am I ok to run to the advance to get another for the final 1/2 qt or wait until tomorrow when I can have someone bring it. About 9 miles down the road straight shot once I get out of the subdivision.

I wouldn't risk it, have someone bring you the quart, just to be safe.

    2008 Tacoma TRD Off Road
    Hello!

I've got a 2008 Tacoma TRD Off Road (6-speed manual) that I bought a week ago and changed the fluid yesterday on my rear differential, transfer case, and transmission. I'm trying to get at the front differential, but the bolt heads snapped on the black plate underneath the front differential. They broke far enough up that the back (closest to bed) is loose, but I'm not seeing how to get the front off. Any advice? I looked through the forums but didn't see anything specifically on this.

    Thanks!
    Marty

A grinder to get the heads offt. Then Drill the old bolts out and re tap the threads. Or try some heat

For those on the fence on tackling this themselves, its by farthest easiest job one can do besides changing the air filter. Dealer charges big money and faster than an oil change and easier.

Just don't expect that coffee can to hold it all. I thought it would for my rear. Freaking joke of a catch can. Mine overflowed in seconds.
