    FSM says in this order

    Check valve timing
    Check distributor instllation

    You can also check the camshaft sensor itself.

    Did you have the battery disconnected ?
    Without cleaning the throttle body , it will take a bit for the computer in your truck to relearn the idle position

    Does it start easily/normally and does it sound normal when it runs for those 5 seconds?

    I had someone doing it for me and how they did it was getting cylinder 1 top center and lining the timing at 0 then putting it on?

    And OP wonders why I mentioned checking timing.

    Code P0336 Definition
    The engine control module, ECM, has detected an improper/irregular voltage coming from the crankshaft position sensor.
    ===========================================================================
    So, start by verifying that the sensor and/or any upstream wiring/connectors weren't damaged or disconnected in the process of installing the new distributor. Assuming that's all good, get your DVOM/Scope out and find out of if the sensor is good or bad. Hopefully it's just a bad sensor, throw a new one in, and done. If not, things could get spendy.

    I’m being told by the shop that when they installed the distributor it fried or messed up the ecm and now I have to get another one.

    Wait what?

    You said you were changing it out, now a shop is involved?

    Why are you diagnosing work you paid to get done? o_O

    I came over to this shop which I’ve been to quite a bit over the while. I watched him replace it and then a po336 code came up. This shop believes it’s the ecm that went out but i need to make sure.

    If they killed the ECM when they installed the distributor, that's their error and their cost to correct. That said, I find it very difficult to imagine HOW you could damage an ECM installing a distributor, it's a pretty s***t-simple job. And, if the ECM had been "fried", I'd expect a bunch of codes, and not one which points to a specific sensor. Not to say that it can't happen, but I'm suspicious. Check out the sensor, and if it's within spec, and the wiring from the ECM to the sensor is good, it could indeed be a damaged ECM, but I would either check it myself or have another shop diagnose the problem if you have the capability to do it.
