Would I be able to change out the rear housing of the transfer case . I have a 2001 Tacoma V6 AT w/2-4 selector with actuator on the rear cover. I Also have a 2003 Tacoma; same tranny different transfer case , only visual difference it does not have the actuator on it. Are the internal parts the same? If I switched just the cover over from the 2001 to the 2003 would that get it or will internals be different? Just looking for quick fix.

Internals will be different, the case/housing will be the same. The 03 will be a J 4wd tcase as your 01 is a push button 4wd.

Thanks . So I take it the internal parts won't be interchangeable.

Like mentioned above, you'll find differences internally between the j shift and push button.
However, fairly easy to pull the transfer case and swap from one to another. Since they are both V6, same spline count, same coupler, definitely possible.

One case will be missing the hole for the actuator shift rod. The inside of the case will have the appropriate fitting but the outside will not have the hole punched out.
