Some like changing their oil every week just for the sake of changing oil. When you get older, and have your oil analyzed at the manufactures recommended oci's, you realize it's been all for not.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up 137 quarts of Phillips Choice 0W-20 at an Orscheln's farm store in Nebraska as they were switching over to becoming a Tractor Supply.
My cost per quart= $.86 plus tax. It's a synthetic blend very similar to Motorcraft Syn Blend. Conoco-Phillips makes them both.

Just right for our RAV4 and '23 Tacoma 6cyl.

I would change every 5k, that's not full synthetic but a great score of oil.

I used RGT for 3k miles just fine. It seems like it was fairly decent oil, but I have since moved on to Amsoil and HPL. See this post for UOA:

Thanks. I change oil and filter about every 2,500 miles. I now have about 23 cases of Choice in my stash. 335,000 miles on a 2001 Dodge Ram, 350,000 miles on a 2001 4.0 6cyl Jeep, almost 400,000 miles on a 1999 Dodge Ram, almost 200,000 on a 2014 RAV4. None of the engines have been opened for repairs. Oil is cheap. Mechanical repairs are not. (And before anyone chimes in with the "but oil has a shelf life" manta I'll tell you up front that I have an email from Conoco-Phillips stating it does not!) My cost on the original 11 cases was around $1.80 with tax.

I just did a 17k interval, I will ship it off to Blackstone. I believe it was supertech full synthetic.

I scored numerous cases of it for 2.99 a quart a few years ago from Advance. It got my truck and the wife's car through several years. Had no issues. I only use genuine Toyota filters from the dealer, and have since gone to Toyota oil in both cars. Have also used 8 year old Schaeffer's trans fluid with no issues. Have never used oil that old.

I'm pasting in the reply from C-P. Transmission fluid is mentioned.

    David,

There is no established "shelf life" for passenger car lubricants. Included are Engine Oils, Automatic Transmission Fluids, and Automotive Gear Oils. If the product(s) remains in factory sealed containers and in a relatively controlled environment it will still be suitable for use after several years. However, from a practical standpoint any Passenger Car lubricant should be used within five years from the date of purchase to keep within a reasonable timeline for product upgrades.

While we’re on the subject…very curious if anyone else does the following:

After I drain the oil, I chase a 1/2 quart of new oil through to take the last vestiges of the oil out of the pan.
It’s something my dad taught me when I did my first oil change on the old 1970 mustang. I’ve been doing it since.

I did this with the rear gear oil change too.

Absolutely not, but I like the enthusiasm. I don't see any need for this, but keep going, its only an extra half quart if it makes you pay tribute to your dad.

Question.. if you hang out on Bob's site why are you changing oil so soon? Has bad info finally taken over over there?
10K for synthetics is the norm, and only then to get the sooty oil out and change filter.
Once upon a time that site had good info. If they are telling you 1K they have went to the opinion side instead of the fact side. There are countless oil analysis threads on here showing 10K is just fine and no appreciable wear by changing sooner. Do what you want tho. Your truck. Just don't expect anyone to believe you or agree with you.

I want to do the first drain early at around 1k, then after that I'll go every 5k. When I hit 60k I'll start increasing the intervals 1k at a time, stopping at 10k. I do this in all my toyotas, most recent my tundra that has 219k and rav4 with 115k. Neither use oil and oil is cheap, especially when finding it for almost free. So no bad info, just my preference.

I think everyone knows 5k or 10k is fine. I think some are not satisfied with fine. Some people just need to go the extra mile. I'm definitely wired that way. It's just a personal thing. Most of us are never going to take are Tacomas to 300k miles but some of us do.

But riddle me this, Batman. There are 2 same mileage Tacomas: one had oil and diff changed at 1k, 5k thereafter and the other had regular factory service intervals.

    Which one do you want?

The one engineers specified. They are smarter than you or me. I know that. Do you? Or are you smarter than the engineers? Apparently the OP is much more intelligent than the Toyota engineers.

See the thing is i have a toyota with 218k miles and do 10k or even longer intervals. Thats my preference and my vehicle will last just as long.
