LOL... and I know plenty of people with those kinds of miles that do oil changes inconsistently and/or at 10K. In fact we've used engines with those kinds of miles and little care, returned as cores, in circle track cars that win.

The one that hasn't got a lot of receipts for unnecessary work?

Actually, I know a lot of Toyota engineers. For 10 years I designed all of Toyota's Auto shows and dealer meetings. I've been at Toyota facilities in Japan. My work was one block away from Toyota when they were in Torrance. And a lot of input, not solely from engineers, determines those service intervals in the manual. Toyota is a very layered political structure and the US dealer body has a lot of sway on product design.

Also, I know some dumb engineers and dumb doctors. They're just people. Some of those engineers are enthusiasts and may change their oil more often and some may just be more practical.

It's amazing, these discussions, it is easy change your oil every 10k miles with full synthetic your engine will last 500k easy. And it doesn't matter what brand of oil you use.

    Yeah.
Too many variables involved. Short trips and many cycles, lots of idling, lots of highway, mixed driving, dusty conditions? Oil analysis only tells you how resistant the oil is to forming varnish and sludge, not how much varnish and sludge may have already developed. We've already seen where Toyota (and probably other manufacturers) has extended the interval and then come back and shortened it. And, we have lots of oil analysis results that show that 10k and even longer is probably just fine. Probably.

People have different motivations. Some people want to push things to the edge and get the most out of their dollars (although oil analysis costs more than an oil change) or just hate being wasteful, others are in the "better safe than sorry" camp, or just get satisfaction from keeping things well-maintained. Neither are wrong.

But obviously we are all idiots that need something to argue about, and we can't do politics here. So, oil it is.

500k is hyperbole. Unlikely. Maybe 250k. But 10k changes with some oils is a recipe for varnish, sludge, and coked rings at higher mileages of ~150k. Look at UOAs of some of the shelf full synthetics at 8-10k showing TBNs under 2. The oil would be forming deposits for 2-3k mi in some of these cases.

10k is fine with the right oil. Not “any” oil. No way.

I can tell you they have been using synthetic 0w20 since 2012....it's what our prius uses with the same 10k oil changes. Were no longer back in the 70's with dino oils, and dirty engines, yet many seem to still assume we are.

If you think you can always take any oil to 10k for all driving conditions and end up with the exact same long term cleanliness, you are wrong. Some oils in some driving conditions drive TBN below 2 within 10k in these trucks.

Not even Toyota says you can always run 10k, and they use extremely high quality Idemitsu oil. If people want to run 10k, they need to select an oil capable of it and ideally check UOAs.

I certainly don't mind other folks changing their oil every 10-20k. I'll change my oil when I feel it's necessary. So very fascinating this vitriol about shorter oil intervals.

I also imagine a vehicle driven harder would get shorter intervals than one driven normally.

Critical thinking skills are in short supply, unfortunately. Many people pick their camps and simply use dogma to guide their thinking. There’s no room for nuance or gray areas. Black and white, right and wrong, always clear-cut.

I did my first at 1400 miles and will go every 5-7k. I have the dealer do it. Avoids any warranty coverage issue with the engine.
