Say that to my busted plastic housing when I tried to do a change after the dealer did it. Then to the metal one that was put on when a different dealer did the change because I didn't feel like dealing with my skids causing me to wake up to oil underneath my taco.

Turns out when the manager brought the housing for me to look at and compare to an actual metal toyota one because it wasn't an OE toyota one, THEY FORGOT THE NEW O-RING.

Needless to say, not even the metal one can stop negligence/improper installation. Crazy it went 13k miles and two changes with that "aftermarket housing" with no issue. Should always go with OE toyota though.

    Good parts can’t fix negligence.

I have a question about prefilling the filter.
Back in the last century when I was a wrench at a stealership, I always prefilled my oil filters.
The intent was avoiding those few seconds of no pressure while the filter was filling.

My new Tacoma has this filter arrangement, and I have yet to do oil and filter as only at the 500 mile mark.

    Q: can this be prefilled?

I got this far without prefilling, but you can prefill.

if the fin breaks then it could have a crack, all force should be put on the hex part of it

Nope. But apparently a lot of Tacoma owners use this one.

It is to me because I want a spare. I've never had to deal with a cartridge filter housing before (except motorcycles, way different) and seeing as the truck is going no where without one it would be a good thing to have in stock.

Yes……you can get it prefilled about 3/4
Pout into center of filter and allow the oil to weep out of the filter and into the housing. It will take a minute or so

I've never felt it was necessary to pre fill the filter but if I did I would pour the oil in the outside of the housing and let it filter to the inside. The center of the filter is the outlet and if someone manages to somehow get some debris in there while pouring the oil, as soon as the engine is started it's going to get pumped right into the bearings. Not a good thing which is why I've never pre filled. That's just me though.

I was skeptical at first...I even spoke to the Parts guy in NY who said it wasn't designed for a Tacoma application.

He did suggest keeping the plastic filter in case it needs to go back on.

Mine works fine for this round of 5K miles...I need an oil change soon.

Local dealership torqued my plastic housing to the moon, and I bought this when I was convinced I would break the plastic housing trying to remove it.

Plastic now off, this one on, and no issues to report.

Funny, because I would have gladly paid $30 more in MSRP for the truck if Toyota had not cheaped out on things like this from the factory.

I’ve been filling oil filters with oil from the center for right at 40 years……never had an issue yet.

And you likely never will but it could happen should someone not be as careful as you undoubtedly are; hence my post. Like I said though I have never believed pre filling was necessary because the half second or so it takes for the pump to fill the filter isn't likely to do any harm. I'm not gonna get in a debate about pre filling or not though. I can see that ending up about as well as "how often should you change your oil" or " what octane should you use" threads.

a lack of oil to the bearings, is a lack of oil to the bearings.

i’ve been working on aircraft for 35+ years. I think I’m OK filling an oil filter with oil prior installation without getting debris in it.

You do you, I’ll do me.
