Changing tire size changes gearing?

    Sorry, but this may be a dumb question but I need to ask it anyway... Someone told me that getting bigger tires will change a gearing? Is that true? I have a base 13 ex cab and am dying to get some decent tires. Need to lose these dunflops from the factory. I would prefer a little bigger tire as I feel there's a lot of space between the tire and wheel well. Thoughts?

    Most Tacoma's come with 3.73 gears and a 30.5" tire. If you go up to a 31.5" tire, which is as big as you can go without modifying the truck, you effectively change the gear ratio slightly. It would in effect be about 3.59 with the taller tire. That small of a difference probably won't be noticed. But if you start going to 33" or taller tires and don't regear the axles the performance really suffers.

    Here is a link where you can play around with different sizes and see how much difference it makes.
