Changing transfer case/differential oils

    Would it be recommended to replace all of these at 30,000 miles?

    Better to just do it all at once,if you going to have to smell like gear oil and be under the truck.Did all mine at the same time.Dont forget the spark plugs!

    Well,most of your time will be spent draining,then pumping the fluid back in.If you have everything ready to go tools,rags,oil,containers you can get it done in an hour.If your new to changing gear oil bit longer.There are a few write ups on here for step by step pics and such.Chris4x4 has some good write ups.That way your all ready to go under there.I went with Mobil1 syn,good stuff.There are also some oil POLLS you can check out with members choices in oil

    As for the spark plugs little bit more involved,great write ups on that also.I have a stick and noticed the difference with new plugs right away.If your mech. inclined you can get it done in 2 hours give or take

    mechanically inclined, but ive never changed any transfer case oils or differential fluids... and special tools required? I got all sortsa wrenches and stuff like that though

    I did this a couple of weeks ago for the first time myself. Was really, really easy. You'll need:
    - 10mm hex head socket for front drain and fill plugs
    - 24mm socket for rear drain and fill plugs and transfer case plugs
    - Torque wrench to tighten plugs to spec.

    Here's a time-saving tip. While you'll need a pump to fill the front transfer case (and that's a pain if you don't have a lifted truck), avoid using the pump to save A LOT of time on the transfer case and rear differential. You can pour the quart bottles directly into the transfer case. If you drop the spare tire before doing the rear, you can do the same there. It'll save you at least 15 minutes of pumping time (at least it sure seems like 15 minutes pumping in 3 quarts into the rear diff!!!).
