My check engine light is on and I'm taking it to the dealer this weekend for what I think will be a charcoal canister replacement (thank god it's under warranty). I was wondering who else has had this problem and if it's a recurring problem. I've read some horror stories on the internet about Toyotas (Tacomas included) having that canister replaced multiple times and still have check engine light problems.

Really? There have been a few that posted on here about it, including one guy who's had that canister replaced 5 times by a dealer. I'm hoping to find that the charcoal canister is not as much of a problem as some other Toyota forum sites made it sound like. Especially since I've only owned my truck for less than 3 weeks.

Thats because dealer people apparently dont know that they need to clean vent air filter near the tank
That maybe your problem too, those charcoal canisters dont die until 200K miles.

Typically one of the practices that ruin charcoal canisters is "forcing" more fuel in the gas tank after the nozzle automatically shuts off. This causes excess fuel and fumes in the canister and overloads it to the point it can't process the normal fumes. When you fill up just let the pump shut off on it's own. Do not put more in to round up to the nearest buck.

I think this is more urban legend than anything, plus most likely for old systems. Now there is air filter that is used to suck fresh air and keep fuel away from charcoal. That filter gets pretty dirty. I can imagine when it clogs it will kill charcoal.

I haven't topped off the tank since I've had it but it was used so I don't know about the owner before me. I was really just trying to see if other Tacoma owners had this problem and whether it was a small minority or a serious problem. Thanks for the replies.

I started getting the CEL and the tracktion light about a month ago and took it into the dealer today at 35798 miles for the 35K service. He said that the light was due to a failure of the charcoal canister, and it was a good thing that I brought it in when I did. Apparently those things cost about $400. Mine will be replaced for free on saturday morning.
