Most everyone uses East coast gear supply but they are in North Carolina right outside of Raleigh . They usually have a one-day turnaround time and have a 5 year warranty on parts and labor. Most of the shops around here I wouldn't trust and Im a mechanic . My shop could do it but it would be a 3-4 day event just because we stay busy and that's just something we don't normally do even though we can do them but for us is too time consuming

Now that you’re here on the East Coast (I’m from Cali too), ECGS is the Mecca for gearing. I made the trip for regearing and front/rear lockers. They have a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty and it’s been tested by a few here. They always honored the warranty with no questions asked.

Making the drive back during the break in period is going to suck ass but you’ll have most of it done by the time you get home.

Yes there are other shops that can do it...but go to ECGS.

ECGS  great warranty, great service. I blew up my rear end after regearing, they swapped in a new one, no questions asked. Every time was less than a day in and out

What were the cautions of driving while breaking it in? I want to regear and put in a true track in my tacoma pretty bad considering taking the 5 hour drive to ECGS to get it done. Would it be a pain to make the 5 hour trip back breaking it in?

Realistically, if it's highway driving, you'll want to drive for about 50 miles (or 30 minutes whichever occurs first) and avoid heavy acceleration. Then you'll want to stop on the side of the road to let the gears cool for about 30 minutes. You'll keep this process up until you get to your destination. Basically, you don't want to overheat your gears and allow them to cool completely. If you're expecting a nice 5 hr drive, double that at least but plan for an all day affair. At the end of the 500 mile break in period, you'll change your gear oil again regardless of condition. On the plus side, you'll be close to your full break in period by the time you get home.

Yeah, could be worth it. Just have to take some days off and not expect to be in a hurry to get back.

That's what I would do if I were in your shoes. That way you can sleep comfortably knowing that it was done by the professionals over there at ECGS. I like wrenching and tearing into my vehicle getting my hands dirty so I'll be accomplishing this in my garage when I scrape the time and funds together. I'm leading towards the 4.88's over the 4.56 given my tire size but I keep mulling over that decision and changing my mind. I'd be happy with both but deciding which is "best" for my needs is the tough decision.

I'll do the rears first since it would be easiest. Get those in the mail and get my core charge back and then move to the front's the following weekend. With the v6 Offroad I have the rear E-locker so I'm in the process of researching if I should just keep A-Trac or having them install an E-locker for the front's as well. I still have to do more research on that aspect. I think the last I checked, out the door I'd be looking at around 7.2k.

On the bright side you'd get a nice chunk of the break-in miles out of the way.

Exactly what @JustAddMud said. Getting it installed takes the day then driving back and stopping all the time pretty much doubled the trip back. I had almost all the break in miles done though so it was worth it. When you stop, you'll definitely want to let the diffs cool off and I found that it took about 30-45 minutes each stop to let them cool.

    Edit: I'm dum.

I got to thinking where the hell did I come up with 7.2k? That doesn't sound right at all, so I went and double checked. Cart is 4,193$ with the Harrup E-locker on assembled diffs. Subtract the Core charge upon successful return of old diff's at 1150, brings price down to 3043$. Id have to add ground freight back onto that base price since they don't cover return shipping if I'm understanding what I read. So :smack: me. If I didn't go with the elocker it would be another 1300 off the cart, so math puts it around 1750$ for both front and rear assembled with solid spacers. Money.

You’re good. Unfortunately I only have 2wd. But on a positive means I don’t need to spend that much. I’m looking at a regear and truetrac. I got a quote for 1700 for parts and labor from ECGS.

Prepare to sit in traffic. The closer you live to base the better. If you're looking to live off base, look around the North Charleston area. All the main arteries will be blocked once the Covid shenanigans return to normal so be prepared to sit in traffic for about an hour or more to drive 20 miles. Other than the traffic, there's all kind's of stuff to do and see in the Charleston area. If you're a foody, down town Chas and Mt Pleasant/Sullivan's island are the more 'foody' places. You can find stuff up north in Summerville, but the selection isn't as big. Lots of interesting sites if you're a history buff, lot's of stuff to do if you have kiddies too.
