So, today at work (technically yesterday since it's after midnight in PA), I killed a brand new automatic juicer!

As long as I've been at the bar where I work, our only method of converting lemons, limes, and oranges into juice for various drinks has been a manual juicer similar to the one pictured below. Our juicer is nowhere near as nice as the $204 example seen below, but it looks a lot like it and it sure does work good. I have no idea if it's been there since my friend's bar first opened in 2005-2006, or if it was purchased in later years (my boss, the present general manager, came in 2011; It may have been purchased after the beginning of her "era"). "Old Reliable" is a bit beat up and has plenty of flaws. The most notable problem that the "piston" gets stuck, especially after it's been sitting for a while; This is easily fixable by rubbing citrus juice (lemon, lime, or orange will do) on the piston/shaft. After today's little debacle, though, this cantankerous old beast will forever be welcome in my bar's prep kitchen...

Pictured below is a juicer virtually identical to the one that seized up on me after 2 small bottles of lemon juice and just short of 4 large bottles of lime juice...

So, here's how it went down...

More than halfway through the process of juicing lemons, I noticed that the impeller thing would become sluggish and have to be coaxed to move by gently pushing it. I was worried I'd burnt out the motor by pushing too hard, but it was still working, so I pressed on and completed those two bottles of lemon juice...

    :woot:

I had other stuff to do, most notably driving to the grocery store to pick up some stuff, and making it back in time for my bi-weekly FaceTime appointment with my therapist...
    :burnrubber:

So the juicer sat dormant for about two hours...

When I cleaned it up about two hours later and started juicing limes, it was working fine. However, about two bottles in, it started acting sluggish again, and on the second or third bottle, I detected a faint smell of burning plastic...
At one point I stuck my head close to the juicer and sniffed, but all I could smell was lime and nothing alarming. I thought it was something else in the kitchen and pressed on...

I was almost done with the fourth bottle of lime juice when it happened...

    :crapstorm:

All of a sudden there was a popping noise and a bright flash or spark from within the juicer, and it just totally died, then smoke started coming out of it. I took hastily took off my apron, unplugged the juicer, ran out of the prep kitchen with the juicer held in front of me like it was this inherently dangerous thing, and said to my boss "I think the juicer's on fire!"

    :bananadead:

She was talking to a couple of customers, and less than happy that I'd interrupted her conversation and mentioned such a thing in front of a customer...

However, she cheerfully commented to the customers that the juicer was brand new, and she'd been procrastinating on putting it into service because she "knew it would be broken within a week."

Go figure, the juicer had only been in use for a week!

My final verdict is that this was inevitable. Using a residential department store juicer with lots of plastic parts for weekly juicing duty at popular bar/restaurant is not a good idea. It never gave the first barback who used it any trouble as far as I know, but if it hadn't died while I was using it, it would have quit on me or one of the other barbacks in the near future...

Here's my theory as to how it died:

It started to overheat while I was juicing lemons, but I stopped before it had the chance to get REALLY hot. Letting it sit for two hours allowed it to cool down, and as such it was functioning normally when I started using it again. However, this round of juicing did it in. I have no idea what specifically caused the spark or made the popping noise, but from what I can tell the motor has totally seized up. So, I'm guessing the parts overheated, fused together, and burnt out the electric motor...

So yeah, that's how I killed the juicer!

My boss is not mad at me, but I'm going to have to make do with the manual juicer for the foreseeable future...

    THE APRON:

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

These roughly $5 sheets of blue vinyl with white shoelace-style strings are probably the best investment we've made in the kitchen, and they were my idea!

Below is a picture of me from last March, wearing one of the blue aprons while juicing limes in preparation for St. Patrick's Day...

The apron worn by the lovely lady in the photo below (which I found online) is pretty much identical to the aprons we have:

So, I've dealt with all sorts of disgusting things working at a bar and do all sorts of less-than-pleasant tasks. Juicing citrus and washing dishes are the only times you'll see me wearing gloves and an apron...

I wear just the disposable gloves all the time when I'm doing stuff like cleaning bathrooms, taking out particularly gnarly bags of garbage, and handling food...

All the shit I deal with working at a bar, and what job do you think I dread the most...?

Cleaning out the women's room! Especially on Tuesday (we're closed on Mondays) after a busy weekend!

Even some of my female coworkers, and one of the owners of the bar (a woman!) agree with me that women are slobs and the ladies room is a mess compared to men and their restroom...

    Where do I begin?

For starters, the women's room also has more toilet paper and paper towels just tossed on the floor than the men's room!

Then, there are what I simply call the "tampon boxes." These are exactly what the name implies...

The plastic boxes bolted to the inside of the stall next to the toilet so women on their periods won't dispose of their various hygiene products in the toilet and screw up the plumbing. I always put the paper bags in these boxes so all I have to do is take them out and dump them. Sometimes coworkers don't bother to do this, and I'm greeted by a plastic box full of used tampons and maxi-pads. Fortunately, all I typically have to do is just dump these boxes (they're removable) into the garbage. Unfortunately, the contents sometimes get stuck and I have to don a pair of disposable gloves, and coax it out by hand. We're talking used feminine hygiene products, including the occasional bloody tampon!

    :annoyed:

Drunks and bathrooms, never a good combination...

I'm not talking about drunk patrons making one and two outside of the toilet or urinal. Drunks are actually quite good at peeing and pooping where they are supposed to! My biggest grievance is that once they are done taking care of business, it seems like they take a look around the bathroom and think "This bathroom is too nice, too clean. There are also no cameras, for obvious reasons, so they know they probably won't get caught. What can I destroy?"

The most obvious thing is toilet paper and towels being discarded on the floor. This is not a big deal...

Soap dispensers, towel dispensers, toilet paper holders...? All have been ripped partially or completely off the wall...

One of the bartenders reported coming into the men's room to relieve himself on a busy Friday or Saturday night and encountered a drunk guy purposely slamming the toilet seat and the door to the bathroom stall, his only goal being to see what would break first. The plastic toilet seat broke first, literally splintering into several pieces. The stall door has also been ripped of it's hinges...

Drunks broke one of the paper towel dispensers, and I have to wrap the damn thing with duct tape every time I refill to keep them from ripping it apart. So far, this tactic has been working!

More than likely the coating on the stator or commutator winding failed. The heat of prolonged use will cause the coating to burn and eventually disintegrate. When that happens, the current will arc across the windings. It's basically short circuiting at this point. Seeing how you mentioned it was a $30 juicer, it was not meant for prolonged use...or you just worked it too hard Charlie...or even a combination of both. ;)

When I was in high school, I wanted a Chevy S-10 or a Toyota Tacoma. To this day, those are my two favorite "compact" pickups. I use parenthesis because while the first generation of the Tacoma was a true mini truck, production of the S-10 and Sonoma ended in 2004, which also happens to be the last year for the first generation of Tacoma. As everybody knows, I own a 2nd Gen.

In my opinion all Tacomas, even the 3rd gens, are good trucks.

My uncle, who has owned numerous Toyota trucks,
feels the same way. His resume includes, in order by year:

1986 Toyota regular cab short bed 2WD (Red, A/C, 22RE/5-speed, purchased from insurance auction with rear damage in 1989 or so
, sold to my grandpa, sold by Grandpa in 1996 when he bought a 1995 Jeep Cherokee from same uncle)

1987 Toyota regular cab short bed 2WD (Black, A/C, 22RE/5-speed, rusted to shit when sold but still going!)

1991 Toyota regular cab short bed (Recently sold)

2002 Tacoma S-Runner (Black; bought new and sold to a friend in 2007 or so)

2003-2004 Tacoma access cab SR5 PreRunner (Red, 2.7L/auto, almost sold my present 2010 back in 2012 to buy this).
