I mean if you want to let it go for $500, I'll come get it right now.

Otherwise, she would kill me. We have an 8wk old that is taking priority right now.

I can honestly say the only thng I've excepted any input from Momma on is whether to remove or leave on the TRD sport decals. She won that one.

lol, neither did we. We elected to just wing it, didn't read any books or take any classes. You just figure it out as you go, not rocket surgery like some parents make it out to be.

Best parenting advice I can give you is keep on winging it you'll stress yourself out reading everyone else's opinions and ideologies in parenting. Do what feels right and it is a dynamic thing anyways, you'll be just fine.

Weren't you saying you wanted one of these shells a while ago?

Guys, I have been researching and I am having a hard time finding a straight answer. I bought my Tacoma with 138,xxx miles on it and a fresh oil change. I am rolling around to time for the first oil change since I’ve bought it.

My question is, since I am completely unaware of the previous maintenance performed what route should I go with the transmission? Drop filter and replace fluid? Flush? Nothing?

I am not currently experiencing any issues, I just want to go completely through the truck but also don’t want to do anything unnecessary.

Do you have the owners manual? Should provide recommended service intervals. If it’s auto you can check the dipstick...which won’t tell you much but at 138k it might be an indicator. I’ve always heard bad things about transmission flushes. Dislodges crud and re-lodges where you don’t want it. If you don’t have any service history I’d treat it as if it hasn’t been done, just my 2 cents.

Personally from a mechanic's point of view I would do all the maintenance of all the fluids. For the transmission though you may want to look how to check the level it is not your typical dipstick check, if you aren't comfortable with that take it to someone you trust to do it. I bought mine with 155k and one of the first things I did was change all the fluids and I mean all brake, power steering, transmission, differentials, oil, and coolant. This way you start with a clean slate and will know the maintenance from here on out. Also manufacturers and oil companies are going with extended service intervals I am a firm believer in not going those routes after tearing down engines and transmissions. But that is of my own experience and opinion if you want to follow the manufacturers service intervals (#of miles not your actual mileage) then that would be ok as well.

As far as the transmission goes I would change the filter fill it to the proper level drive it for 5-10 miles to get everything circulating then do a flush. If you do not want to do the flush you could drive it for around 1000 miles then just do a drain and fill. If you go the drain and fill route after the filter change I would do that 2-3 times.

If you would like further explanations I am more than happy to oblige. My recommendations are coming from almost 20 yrs as a tech.

Transmission flushes are not inherently a bad thing, we serviced most transmissions that way gets a complete fluid change. There is no dipstick on the 2nd gen tacomas. Usually the horror stories are because someone neglected their service for wayyyy to long the fluid is straight burnt up and should of never been serviced in the first place. It doesn't just dislodge stuff but there are friction modifying additives to help with the clutches and bands in a transmission and when you get ones that are already compromised to grip again it causes issues. Also trans fluid is very high in detergents you can put a quart in your engine when you change your oil and run it for a little bit and it will help get a lot of sludge and coking cleaned out of the engine which has the potential of dislodging stuff and clogging the oil pick-up screen, this could also happen in a transmission after a flush, drain and fill, or filter replacement.
