Recommendations on first modifications to work toward? Should I get ground clearance (tires and minor lift as I'm well past my big truck days) or should I focus on protection?

Not totally necessary, mine is no where close to rubbing.

I'd go with good tires first, but I'm still a newbie at driving off road.

 

A beast like a bull in a china shop. The tacoma is a small, agile offroader, the truck is great if you keep it protected. Sliders and lift first, skids and bumpers soon after. SOS Concepts is the man, you have the added benefit of a short drive for local pickup

 

Don't need it unless you get massive offset wheels or large tires. I run 33's on stock steel wheels and don't rub.

 

Get it out of the way and it will never hinder you in the future. Always flexible. What size tires you running? Tall skinnies?

 

Yea 255/85. Why not just cut the fenders off while you're at it, never have to worry about those hindering you in the future.

 

Why not, then you could buy an SOS bumper and it'll already be trimmed. Might as well trim the back too for a high clearance.

Yeah that thing looks super flimsy to me, may be lighter than tube but don't think its worth the trade off, plus those bolted joints are a weak point.

 

Yep, wouldn't trust that with more than 200lbs on it.

That's why I'm building my own verrrry soon and maybe a couple spares to sell...I have access to a good tube bender, tube notcher, bandsaw, etc etc.

 

There was a whole thread about it, some dude pitched a fit and put them on blast.
