I just read your thread. Doing a HG DIY should be a lot cheaper than a DIY engine but can be more frustrating when it comes to making sure the cams and everything stays phased when reinstalling. Every time and I mean every time I did a HG no matter what I sent the heads off to get checked for cracks and straihtness. If they needed machined or anything else I would have that done. Didn't matter if the engine overheated or not. I was bit one time doing a lift and swap on HG and ever since I will not do it ever again. LKQ (some people hate them) I have had good success with as far as engines. In fact one of their engines is now in my truck with ~120k on the ODO. LKQ will warranty the engine longer if a shop sources it and installs it rather than doing it DIY. Also if you do source form them for the warranty to be covered look on their website they have a list of items that must be replaced with new engine. If you DIY save the receipts for those parts. Weigh the cost factors and make sure you source quality parts whichever route you go. Oh and don't run the truck much at all. All it takes is a little bit of water and it can wipe a crank bearing or cam journal very quickly if the coolant starts getting into the crankcase. At that point you will be doing an engine.

A good mechanic which it sounds like you have one with your buddy from mercedes shouldn't shy away from any vehicle just because it isn't something he's familiar with. All internal combustion engines are the same form factor just done in slightly different ways from Yugo to Ferrari.

Thank you @ovrlndkull I appreciate it. That is my line of thinking. Less room for error with a swap, less labor and more longevity. I've only had it 11 months so a new engine will last me a while.

Dealer wants 40 hours labor for HG, 29 for engine swap. I'm gonna keep looking and may end up diy.

If I had the time or space I would of done mine myself. But I am a former tech so I wasn't scared just needed more time and space than I had so there is that to consider when factoring in the cost. Plus the LKQ longer warranty for a shop doing it was a plus.

I hear there is a guy in Stallings, NC that will do a swap for $1200. Apparently Advanced Auto recommends him for engine installs. Gonna call him Monday.

There is a reason why he's cheap just check him out thoroughly. Mechanics aren't in it to loose money just sayin. Also it's pretty easy to get on a recc. shop list with AA, AutoZone, Orielly's etc. The once more professional providing parts stores would never recc. shops. Also usually parts store guys "make friends" with shop owners and mechanics so they can get the majority of their business they will recc shops sometimes to kick the shop a bone and give them more incentive to do business with them even if the shop sucks.

Just letting you know there is a behind the scenes gentlemen's agreement thing. Just vet the dude as best you can. At that 1200 bucks for ~30 hrs book time he's only making 40 bucks an hr that isn't very much at all in reality. Also in reality it will really turn out to be more than the ~29 hrs toyota quoted you as there is usually a lot of parts swapping and replacing.
