Anyone ever use a winch line to redirect the path of a tree fall? I have a couple of small diameter but taller trees I need to take out, they have too much lean to get them to fall the way I want with a back cut. Obv not going to do a straight pull but I thought about putting a snatch block at the base of an adjacent tree with the line end higher up on the tree I am cutting. Truck would be on the driveway. Thinking I can just tension the line then cut the tree and it'll fall away from the house. @ovrlndkull @jlemmond @slander thoughts?

I have zero experience cutting down trees that I actually cared where they fell and or using a winch to prevent them from hitting something. Here's a good thread on another forum talking about this and there are some hazards I didn't even think of when you try to pull it over while cutting it down.

How tall is the tree and whats the lean look like? It'll work gotta get high enough in the tree to have a good pull. You don't even need the winch just some tension from the rope.

I can’t advise on the winch pull but I’ll chime in on the tree removal.

I had a large dead oak leaning towards my tool shed and paid someone just to drop it so I wouldn’t destroy my shed. I cut it up and took it to the woods. It was much cheaper that way but still ended up costing $300 for about 30 minutes of work. Cheaper than replacing a shed and it’s contents though. That price was 5 years ago with Carolina Tree Care.

One of the things they did that I wouldn’t have been able to was climbing the tree with what looked like crampons and rope to tie off and remove certain limbs that could’ve damaged the shed, fence and surrounding trees as it was dropped.

There are a couple but the one I am most concerned about its probably 60' but only maybe 6" diameter. It's right next to another, much larger, tree so it has grown leaning away from that tree, toward the house. I have dropped a bunch with just pulling a line like you said but this has more lean than I like and I dont have a second person anyway.

@SwampYota Im not opposed to paying someone to take it out if need be but since I've got some experience with this and several saws I thought I might try it. Obv will be really upset with myself if I drop it on my house though. That's why I thought the winch might help redirect it with just a little forethought.

Should work fine as long as you can get your attatchment point on the tree high enough to get some pull on it. Ive pulled over plenty with nasty back lean. Get as much tention on it as possible, start your cut and it should start moving the direction you want.

Really not a whole lot to it. IMHO

Thanks, that's what I thought, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I do plan to keep the snatch block as low as possible, in case the tree lands on the winch line I dont want to shock load it. If it's low the line will just be along the ground.

I will say that a tree with that diameter..depending on how bad the back lean is, your gonna wanna start you back cut first and drive in a wedge. Otherwise you risk pinching your saw if you go the conventional route and cut your wedge first and come in for the back cut last, there wont be enough holding wood left to keep the tree from fallowing the lean and sitting down on your saw.

Going by the info you gave. 60 ft height by 6" diameter (720 inches divided by 6 inches = 120) this tree has 120 segments along its length ( think quarters stacked on top of each other ) So if your raise the back edge of the lowest segment 1 inch you will move its front edge one inch. At the same time the top of this 120 segment tree will move forward 120 inches (10ft ). 10ft is enough to overcome any amount of back lean.

I have notifications setup through Realtor and Zillow. It's crazy to see how many houses were listed this morning or last night and already under contract.

Holy fuck, there is no way people had time to physically view the property...are people really just buying sight unseen?? I don't know that we will be able to deal with that trying to buy a new place in the spring. NFW I am going to buy a house without seeing it for myself first.

That's exactly what is going on. People are tired of loosing houses so they are buying site unseen.

The real estate market in general is due to change significantly, or at least the way RE agents work and get paid. When you're able to do so much of your own research and virtual viewing a RE agent is providing less value.

    Fuuuuuuu

These have to be pocket listings or some shit.

if that is the case there is no way we’re in a position to buy in this market.
