    Just an FYI I went to get my IL registered car inspected today before heading over to get plates next week and they told me you don't have to get an inspection for out of state vehicles to get NC plates and wouldn't inspect my car. Will update once I get my plates.

    Yeah you're probably exempt for the 1st year. They keep changing it up so much hard to actually know wtf is going on.

    The dmvs website is so damn vague as well! Hopefully the people are as cool as the driver's license facility here in hickory. Super nice and actually seemed like they enjoyed being there, it was crazy!!

    Sorry, I should clarify. Didn’t want to throw too many topics out at once...

    I keep all my tags/licenses/insurance in NC. But I’m out of state right now for when I need to update it and won’t be back in time. Anyone have experience with doing an out of state exemption?

    As per the DMV webpage, it sounds like you can just go get your tires rotated and so long as it has your vehicle info on it, can submit that in lieu of an actual inspection. But I reckon I could just get an inspection as well...

    @slander @ovrlndkull

    Both correct about waiving the first year for inspections when getting new plates.

    I have nothing for you I've never had to deal with an out or state exemption. I'd go ahead and start working on it and not wait till the last minute.

    They’re right, I think I remember telling you that it doesn’t need inspection if transferring from out of state, it will just need inspection to renew. If you’re registering vehicle that has not been registered for over a year, it will need inspection first.

    Sounds about right. The tag place isn't run by the state they are a contract company so it's hit and miss on someone that actually knows what they are doing or cares.

    Haha, yea if you call five different DOT employees you could get five different answers. I deal with the NC DMV a lot for my fleet so I have a bit of experience now.

    Oh and FYI if you’re going to register a trailer, you just need the title and the proof of insurance for the vehicle that will tow it. No personal trailer inspections in NC.

    I was asked for it when I registered mine 9 years ago. Maybe it’s not required but probably good to take in with you. Like I said, five different answers :cookiemonster:

    Interesting I've never been asked but last trailer I registered I got a permanent tag and that was like 12-15 yrs ago now. Also didn't have the title just a bill of sale for the trailer.

    That last part is about the most annoying thing in dealing with all this BS.
