I want to get them out roots and all. Guess I'll be renting a bobcat or something with a backhoe.

I honestly think the winch would just drag the truck into the holly bushes, and I don't have any trees left in the front yard to anchor to.

I had a strap around the base of the biggest bush and was holding about 3500 RPMs for a few good minutes.

Have you tried digging around it and axing some of the bigger roots? Then pulling? Soaking the piss out of the soil/dirt might help soften it also.

I thought about soaking the ground, yeah, but I didn't actually do it. My preference would be to pull the roots out without cutting them, since holly is so bad about growing back if you don't get the roots.

From experience even the smallest root will sprout a sucker and it'll grow another. Be prepared to be battling them for a long time to come. If you choose to you can drill some holes in the stump and pour straight roundup concentrate in the holes it'll kill it completely and make pulling it later easier. The caveat is round-up and it's controversies.

Yeah true. Maybe digging out some soil and soaking the rest would give it less to hold on to.
