Get the sawzall out and make it happen!!

I hate these french doors, it basically makes my dining room and living room unusable if I want to open them due to the swing of them and one has a ghetto tastic screen on it and that's it. They also mostly obscure the badass view we have out the back of my house, and I'm not broverlander baller enough to replace it all with a window wall!!

i just quoted remove doubles and replace with sliders at a tough access condo uptown, 10k each. (9 in total) Inclusive of minimal wood replacement, head flashing and sill pans. Its in the ballpark, a lot of coin to let go for sure though.

10 yrs ago when I did my parents 2 sliding doors ea door was around 5g for a nicer level model. Just make sure you know the brand and what level they are selling you. Then you can shop similar. But that doesn't sound too far off.

Looks like you've had it in 4hi out at the WWC in the gravel with that 1up rack.

While you can shop around and save a few grand I'm sure, that doesn't sound too crazy based on the quotes I've had. I would definitely NOT want to pay $15k for some fucking doors, but that's unfortunately the life we live nowadays.

That's not too terribly bad then. If they were for basic builder grade crap then I'd say run. A lot of guys will try and price like that it's pretty crappy. Like Jimbo said about the flashing and sealing some guys try and short cut do that part properly.

That seems fantastically expensive. What did your other quotes come in at?

But Unfortunately a lot of contractors are so busy right now they throw out high bids to price themselves out.

Working on getting others, I thought it was kinda cheap, but I'm still calibrated to expensive as fuck Illinois. For reference we paid about that for 4 windows to get replaced back there.

I'm guessing it's all going to be all over the map right now based on "supply chain" shit and inflation.

When I sold my house in Cary to move to Charlotte I had ten windows replaced for $200 a piece. Oh to be 2016 again. Life was so simple.

I am getting a new front door put in. While it is no rod iron door I believe it to be a decent front door and it no small door measuring at 84+”opening. I am installing myself. Can’t afford to have someone install it and screw it up. $2200 for the door. Honestly I don’t know what your putting in place of your current doors but make sure to take into account ROI. I wouldn’t put $15k into doors. $15k in the kitchen will give a better ROI. Ain’t no one going to look twice at what kinda doors you got and pay extra for the house. But they will check if you have soft close tracks on your kitchen cabinet drawers . I would say you should be able to replace those for $4k tops. But again I shop at Lowe’s and I am not into designer stuff. I would rather make my own door for that price with my carpentry experience it would just be a bit of work but well worth saving $15k.

Because people are dumb and and don't realize what matters in a home is the structure and outer envelope. People like the shiny lipstick stuff and don't realize the pig their buying is a lame duck. I'd most definitely pay a higher premium for a higher quality built home than what's being built in the current mass market pop up developments.

You making a door is great until the glazing is single pane and allows huge amounts of heat transfer, the seal from the jamb to door fitment isn't ideal, etc. Lowe's stuff is pretty much entry level builder grade which is why it's such a big price jump for you.

That's like someone saying I can sheath a house cheaper to the guy who is using a zip system.

    My experience:
No doubt quality is important in a home. Being previously from Arizona I would argue that I am wise about energy efficiency. My house was from 1996 and I turned it into a home that was at least 10+% more efficient then an modern energy efficient home.

Electric bill for me was $115 a month in a 2100+ sqft house at $.09 kWh and I had a 10k gallon pool and kept my home at 73 degrees all day (didn’t have solar) and had the pool running 12 hours a day. Where I was at (Phoenix area) we would hit 120 degrees in the summer and had 60+ days over 110 degrees in 2019 (left before summer 2020). Yet my home even had a department store front door installed by me there as well.

    Understanding what your buying:
Single pane, Double pane, Triple pane is important based on a lot of conditions. If you have a lot of sun vs little sun, where the sun hits it and for how long. Most doors these days contain double pane windows (even cheap department store doors). To think I wouldn’t incorporate these basic items within my custom build is funny.

    My viewpoint:
My point is $15k for 2 doors seems steep unless it has the house to match or the purchaser has the money to spend. If energy efficiency is a concern I would argue that money should be saved and put towards solar or get a new AC system that is 21 seer like I had in Arizona.

While I am not dogging on quality build. I love them just as much as the next person with a keen eye for detail. Some Arizona homes would have iron built doors and those things were beautifully built doors and they had the price tag behind it. Those doors stood out and were more like an incentive when buying a home but didn’t have much ROI.

    My suggestions:
I suggest staying wise with expenses and staying within the buyers budget and understanding ROI (more than just money but also usefulness and other factors). As stated I believe quality matters but I don’t see the ROI on expensive doors unless they go with a home to match. I believe there is a middle ground in door quality and finish. My front door I bought was normally $3k but I got a huge savings on Black Friday. So to the OP with the doors, I would look into savings and discounts before proceeding.

Good luck to the OP on the doors. I hope you figure out what is best for you and you are happy with the result.

@4x4 fun it's 3 doors and I listed my reasons why i want them replaced. This isn't my first rodeo with a house, I know the cost benefit analysis, and also what my time is worth. Im just looking to get baseline ball park prices, as I'm getting used to the different costs down here vs where I used to live.

I will build shit out of rusty scrap metal all day long on my truck, but when it comes to my house which is most expensive thing I own I'll generally go mid to high quality stuff, for that very reason, ROI and I have to live with it everyday. It's not a toy that I'm bouncing off rocks all day.

I totally understand your viewpoint as a house is an investment but our vehicles are rust buckets waiting to happen. I was merely responding to your original question….

I got a quote for $15,134, that includes tax, install and hauling off those doors. Does this sound decent?

With 3 doors that makes a bit more sense. I must have missed that before responding. But 2 doors seemed steep to me.

I am in the same ballpark as you when it comes to quality. I aim for the middle range. Hope it all turns out well.
