Hey all- first time poster, long time reader here.

I've just inherited a 2002 extended cab TRD with a 218K and a bunch of aftermarket parts I'm still trying to identify, all I know at this point is that it was lifted about 2.5". The thing has a whole host of issues from being criminally under-maintained, but the first I'm trying to figure out is this noise.

The noise is kind of a metallic crackling/rattling, pretty faint but definitely audible, from the front undercarriage while moving only. It seems to react mildly to speed changes, and can be heard from 1-35 mph. The sound goes away once the truck has warmed up, but will come back for a short time if the truck is parked for ten or so minutes.

At first I thought it was the CV axle, because there was a torn boot, but no change. The front wheels don't have any notable play when off the ground, and the driveshafts also feel solid. I hate taking any of my vehicles to a mechanic, but I'm running out of ideas here. Anyone know what it could be?

    Thank you in advance!

Hard to tell without hearing it. Loose skid plate/heat shield maybe. Something on the exhaust?

I think I may have just won the idiot of the year award. I just took it out to run some errands and give it another listen, but your post reminded me that I saw a missing bolt on the skidplate. At the time I didn't think much of it, because I thought the sound was more of a drivetrain issue. I zipped it off before I left, and sure enough, it's much quieter. There are still some mystery noises, but I think most of those just come from being a 21 year old lifted and undermaintained truck.

Glad it you got it figured out. If the bolts snapped off I found these drill bits make quick work of drilling them out. https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/48-89-4875

Agee, you'd be surprised of the different sounds and how far the noise can travel from a slightly loose heat shield bolt.

Hopefully you're going to keep the truck and are physically able to rehab it. There's plenty of fun to be had replacing bushings, timing belt, lower ball joints, suspension items, bearings, valve cover gaskets, valve clearance, rust rehab/prevention and asking what's the biggest tire that'll fit without rubbing. I left a few out but the echo crowd will be along shortly.
