My wife and I are moving From St Petersburg, Florida to Santa Rosa, California in a month! We are selling all of our stuff and not taking anything that we can't fit in the 2017's 5.5 FT. bed and back seat of the quad cab. Seeing that we want to make frequent stops at some of our national tourist sights along the way we and are aware that you always end up with more then you think your going to have we are considering getting a bed topper. We probably don't need it after we move and will probably end up selling it once we get to Cali but then again we are planning on doing some camping. What are my best options? Cheap is the biggest concern. I don't mind a used one.

Soft topper would probably be your best bet, and I imagine it wouldn't be hard to resell in Cali. It just has a little less security protection than a hard top

Pack your stuff on a pallet and ship it. Then turn your trip into a vacation and stop worrying about all the crap and enjoy yourselves. Moving is hard enough don't make a miserable trip out of it. A 4 foot cube on a pallet isn't allot to ship compared to the hassle and the risk of it traveling in the back of your truck.

The issues with this is we are staying in a hotel for the first month and we may be going to Seattle first to hop on an Alaskan cruise for a week before heading to Cali.

Buying a topper is about $2k.

Unless you, find a used one on Craigslist.

A new topper will cost you at least a grand. Use the month you have to scour craigslist and TW's marketplace for a used one.

I read in another post on here that I could get a color matched Snugtop for $900. Anyone know about this?

I don't know about that, but craigslist is definitely your best bet. If you are not picky, you can find caps for $500-600 all day. May have to look look in surrounding areas, but in a month you can definitely find one.

Call all the local topper places and ask about used. They take trade ins. Since color won't matter if you ditch it later, or you can paint if you keep it.

Topper King and several other places around.

LEER is going to probably be the cheapest out of them all with ARE coming in second.

Call up a local shop, sometimes they have shells customers ordered but didnt end up following through or maybe some used shells.

My suggestion, once you get the shell, cover the windows with black paper so people dont see all your stuff in the back.

Don't think you have to spend a lot. Just bought an aluminum utility canopy for my '17 TRD DC LB with screened sliding side windows and an unscreened front window. Cost was $840, incl. Washington's 10% sales tax. I bought mine for the ease of take off / put on, as I seasonally remove or install it. Aesthetically, it's not much to look at (not color coded, or styled to fit with my truck), but it sits in my garage unused for over half the year. Probably could break into it with a can opener, but it will deter the theft of opportunity.

I don't have anything to add that others haven't (I use a soft topper) but I have to say...I'm jealous of the balls.

I recently relocated to a different state. All I dared to do was throw everything away I hadn't used in six months. Half a dumpster worth and it felt good. But I couldn't imagine getting rid of everything. That has to feel good/scary. Haha

Yea, its a little scary but mostly good. I have come to realize that I really don't need much of anything and anything I do need I can obtain at any time. Just keeping some personal items and 1 flat screen. The biggest thing is my king sized Tempurpedic bed that I paid $3800 for 5 years ago. I'm sure going to miss it but I can always buy another bed and I doubt I'd buy one of those again as they stay hot and can sometimes make you sweat.
