Most recent cheap mod that is super satisfying is the 4 window auto switch. One touch auto up & down. Backlight is not a perfect match. It is a light blue, never bothered me as its kind of out of the way.

How hard is it to swap out the start stop switch as I'm considering the same thing?

Thought I was the only one that did that. Works like a charm and lasts a decent amount of time before the noise returns.

I did this as well - I would rate it very easy - just pop out the old and pop in the new. I think thee may even be a Youtube video but it pretty simple and intuitive.

So I was looking at and using my analog IFR altimeter that sits in my cupholder along with using my ‘analog’ book of topo maps to help navigate a BLM trail I was on the other day and I realized that I probably never properly thanked you for posting that description about your altimeter. When using it with paper topo maps, it’s actually much easier and faster to get a precise location than it is with GPS. I found one just like yours and I love it. Thanks so much!

If using for an extended period of time you need to reset the barometric pressure (ie. elevation) to keep the elevation accurate.
i used to use on old navcom to get pressure off tuned in VORs but now I just set elevation at a known spot (garage usually) and accept that over time barometric pressure will change and elevation accuracy will degrade. if you are using topo maps and can identify where you are in 2D, you can easily maintain elevation accuracy. is that what you are doing or do you have some way of accessing barometric pressure?
paper USGS topo maps are great. assuming they are not burned up in a wildfire, when all digital comm goes dark, they will still work :D

I can calibrate it on my driveway also before leaving for a day trip, and as I’m in the west a lot of passes have elevation markers or I am also able to use a Delorme topo map book that I keep in the truck to also do it. I have an old surveying altimeter that is accurate to smaller than a foot and it would also make a good barometer, but it also requires doing temperature calculations along with barometric calibration to get that type of accuracy and it’s about a foot in diameter- too big for the cup holder to take on trips!
