I have a snugtop camper shell with the rails installed for a roof rack.

Are there cheap slide in cross bars or full racks on the market or does anyone have plans on how to DIY a cheap functional one?

I cant find much more then rhino racks for $400+ seems like a bit more than is like to spend for something id only use every So often
    thanks

You don't need a roof rack, you just need the bars.

Why don't you look at the currently installed rails to determine the mounting setup you require and go from there?

Maybe just looking up the same brand bars as your rails?

I would like just rails or maybe even a basket without the side walls, just for more anchor points for stuff up top.

I’ve used ratchet straps with hallow pool noodles. About as cheap as it gets.

    Hahaha
Id like a more semi permanent set up.

really want to mount a solar panel and have room to tie something down if needed

Not quite sure what you could use for the mount from the rails to the rack, but I used a couple of flat steel bars painted black for mine. Cost about $75

You can attach a few more 'feet' and run extruded aluminum to really make it modular.

Since you asked about "cheap alternatives", I found that one from an Isuzu Rodeo in the salvage yard fit my shell pretty well.

If you go to scrounge one off an SUV or something, pay attention to the curvature of the roof vs your shell. That's why I grabbed the Rodeo one. The roof on that gen Rodeo was almost flat.

I know it was filthy in this pic. Due to me flat bedding the truck, it had been sitting under a Maple tree for almost a year. I ended up giving it to another TW member.

2 pieces of unistrut work great and will bend less than any crossbar your can buy.
