He had on an enormous drop hitch, the length of the drop caused it to shear.

Right. The area where the force was being applied shrank because of the angle. I’ve had a tow truck company for about 12 years and I’ve seen some horrific things; both from tow truck drivers and those being towed.

The forces being applied to weak points can be so great. It’s nothing to scoff at for sure. If I knew I didn’t have the right gear to recover a vehicle, I just wouldn’t do it. I’ve seen people get hurt and it’s not worth it. Especially in the mountains and hills I’ve towed in. That being the Sierras and Yosemite and the corresponding foothills underneath.

If you want to look cool, buy the cheap shit.
If you want something you can hook your truck to and not kill you, go to Yankum ropes and get a soft shackle to keep with you.

that was really only one of the factors.

i posted the breakdown video before, but it bears reposting.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb3BkeeXlIo

that truck was buried to the frame. even taking the drop hitch out of the equation, they were using 'hold mah beer, i'll tug harder!' math. if the hitch wasn't what broke, they'd break everything else. and the risk that something else went through the windshield is just as substantial.

ANY proper recovery shouldn't be be coming close to the load limit of any gear used. if you're breaking anything, or unaware of the tensile strength of the stuff used, it's wrong and someone can easily get hurt. there's just as many ways to take a beat, slow down, look at the situation to do a slow proper recovery, as there are to screw it up and someone can get hurt.

vehicle recovery really isn't difficult. the successful recoveries are really just better at stepping back and acting appropriately, instead of gut-reacting, and trying to hurry things up, or buying inferior gear.

i've really got no problem with walmart/ebay/Amazon shackles. they're pretty simple devices. soft shackles are similar. but understanding the gear involved, and the forces at play that got the vehicle stuck.

@PanzerDivisionBlack, as others have stated you have nowhere to attach shackles on a stock Taco. If you like the look of shackles you will need to invest in a bumper with recovery points. Mine is a 4WP bumper with a pair of Napa 2x2 Spot Lights and a Harbor Freight Badlands Apex winch. The bumper alone was $700 if I remember correctly. That is a lot of money/work just for the look of a couple of shackles.

I bought a pair of Rhino 20 Ton, 3/4 in shackles for $27.90 off Amazon. I went with these so I wouldn't be heartbroken if some dope stole them. They feel every bit as solid as any of my other shackles although I have not used them for recovery. I'm usually the one winching others / dragging cars around my yard and for that I use the winch and some Harbor Freight soft shackles.

My recommendation: if you are really concerned about recovery, buy two soft shackles and a 4 in x 8 foot Badlands tree protector. Put the soft shackles around your lower control arms a rated recovery point then thread the tree protector through the soft shackles and attach that to the rope your rescue vehicle is using (a kinetic yankum type rope).

I would not suggest wrapping anything around your LCA.

Solid call. I was thinking of point loads for most of my use cases - LCAs are fine for what I do: level ground and old cars that need to be repositioned in the yard. Always shackle around a rated recovery point.

I don't think you can use the transport hook as a recovery hook actually

Common sense shackle theft prevention: keep them inside the truck, hey maybe under the seat? Install the shackle only when needed. And like others said: spend the money on a quality recovery point RE: ARB

are you saying that as 'all the time', or you're suggesting the LCA isn't a strong enough recovery point at all?

Your LCA should not be used as a recovery point.
