You’re dip stick has a wide acceptable zone. I generally do it cold when I do the oil change and sometime later after running the vehicle around.

i do believe the level on the dipstick will be at its highest level when it is cold?
check in morning before start up or other way if you are graveyard inclined

    Does not matter.

In the good old days of crap domestics that burn more oil than gas, I'd check the oil at every fill up (or every other), which means when it's hot.

Or do it when it's cold so you don't burn your hand, lol.

Check it in the morning, before start up as @GQ7227 suggested. That's as accurate as it gets.

Edit- Half a quart I probably wouldn't be too concerned about, any more than that, I dump some.

were you on a level surface? If I check my oil when my truck is tilted one way or the other, even slightly, it throws off the reading.

Cold is fine. If you've been driving let it sit for a few minutes to let the oil drain to the pan. If you've been driving there will be residue in the tube that might show a higher than true reading. So fine it a couple minutes.
