Thanks for that explanation. I still have to remove the tube to take off the egr valve correct? At least it looks like I do.

If you pull that tube off.....its the devil to get back on....

there's a strap at the mid point bolted into the back of the engine...

even with my years experience.....it broke me.....could not get that metal clamp back on...
even today, we're just hanging free commando mode back there....
    hopefully it doesnt start vibrating.

At most i'd just loosen at the other end(exhaust end)....
so the other end could swing a little....
but remembering its going to be teetering on that mid strap on back of the engine....

nothin comes easy on these trucks....

Your worst problem is getting the old gasket material off....

    boy that was a heck of a job.....worst 'baked-on' I've ever seen....no kidding....like old old cement...

I had to use a razor sharp putty knife, heat, and wd-40.

It is all steel except for the intake head..

controlcar just went thru all this couple/three months ago....

he can be just as much help if not more than I can...

unfortunately to get that egr off or loose, it has to swing off the studs.....so it has to have a lot of play to do that....

like I said.....they didnt make too many things easy on these...

    @ControlCar
figuring out how to get the EGR off the studs?

I got the two bolts holding the EGR tube onto the EGR off, and I got the two bolts holding the EGR on the manifold off, I also took off the two water hoses off.

I think someone said you did this not too long ago. thanks in advance man!

I pulled my old EGR valve nuts off with the smallest locking pliers. The studs came out with them. Sometimes smaller is better.

    yeah
    Was a PITA
And my 2 bolts had zero rust !

after I modified AM gasket with a file, I managed to put the gasket on those two studs. That’s the hard part.
I gently pulled the erg pipe back to firewall. Not to gain enough space (that would link/buckle that pipe) but moved pipe back enough to wedge a tool in between the two flanges.
This somehow done without damaging gasket.
If I remember right, I did the pry job with long screwdriver…… but twice
Once on each outer side of the studs
Not in the middle of the flange

    hope this helps bro!!!!!

These are my two studs. a small 7/32nd deep dish socket fits snug on there. Do you think I should use that? Feels solid.

    Yep
    That is the situation
Moving that pipe back enough (without damaging) and getting 1inch of clearance to replace gasket

so you opted to remove the bracket on the pipe versus removing the studs like control car dead.
What type of head is on top of those studs? is the stud threading the same as the nuts?

    thanks boss.

    ^^^IMO the studs have a star pattern(rusty)
very possible that stud screws into the valve body itself
    (unknown though)
figure that would be more of a PITA to get out or possibly strip the threads thou

i never thought of using O'S technique of loosing/taking off the lower portion of the EGR pipe

Done. I removed the bolt holding the pipe on the back of the engine. Found it to be quite easy on my truck after much hesitation.
It still wasn’t enough to take my EGR valve off though, close.
So then I went ahead and took off the two studs. Should’ve done that first because the access is easier and it came up fairly easy as well with a 7/32 deep dish socket.

I know I did it correctly. Check engine light is still on though. I know it could be the Vacuum modulator, or the VSV. But assuming it was the EGR valve, could it possibly take a certain amount of time or mileage for it to come off?

    thanks guys.

    Kaleo…..
    U motivated me
    (I didn’t clean my EGR)

    IMG_3981.jpg

    On the to do list…..

let us know what codes are now

I saw one video that tested Egr by putting suction to….and Egr valve moved
Even after a cleaning, if too clogged up, valve won’t move….need to replace then

    thanks for update

    Code is still P0401.
Except this time it’s saying EGR back pressure transducer?
    Is that the vacuum modulator?
    Please advise

I’m going to takeoff/check the pipe next.
